My picks today are ones that I like that are still on the air with an upcoming season.

Peaky Blinders (2013 - )
Set after World War 1, it follows the fictional Shelby crime family as they run their legitimate and criminal business. Have continued to love this series. It's very fast paced, gritty and I love how they use contemporary rock music as their soundtrack. It also has a fabulous cast and it's always interesting to see who joins the series for a season as the new rival gangster; they previously had Tom Hardy and Adrien Brody.

Get Shorty (2017 - )
The series follows a gangster as he gets into the movie business as a movie producer. I knew that there had been a movie before this and that it was based on a book, but I didn't know much about the actual story. I really like this TV series. It's like a crime drama slash dark comedy and it really is funny. I especially enjoyed the whole movie making aspects of the story. I've also since watched the 1995 movie - it was very meh. The TV series is sooo much better.

McMafia (2018 - )

An English-raised son of Russian mafia exiles, now living the ordinary life, is drawn into the criminal underworld when his uncle's plan for their family's return to Russia backfires. McMafia is based on a non-fiction book about global organised crime and the tv series puts a fictional family at the center of the story through which we see how organised crime works on a global scale. We basically see gangs from across the world and see how they are connected or serve other gangs distances away. I've actually picked this earlier this year for the freshmen series theme and apparently it's coming back for a second season so it has earned a place as one of my picks today.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Period Drama

I thought I had a period drama theme before for TMP, but apparently not, that was only the TV edition. It would be hard for me to pick my favourite period dramas unless I went by a much narrower criteria and a theme within a theme because I do enjoy quite a lot of period dramas. So instead I'm just going for recent watches that I like.

In Secret (2013) 

 A young woman trapped in a loveless marriage, begins an affair with her husband's friend that has tragic consequences. I've been wanting to see this for while. Based on a book, the story of which I was mostly unfamiliar with, it had you know those fallen women kind of premise like Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina, so I was curious how the story would set itself apart from those and I had definitely expected a suicide to occur because that is like the typical end these authors gave to their leads. And ha! I was right about the suicide, but since I don't want to spoil too much I'll just say the story does set itself apart from the above titles as its goes beyond just infidelity and overall the movie itself was pretty ok. The first half moves rather slowly but the second half saves it, especially after the lake incident where consequently everything soon unravels.

The Dressmaker (2015)

A dressmaker returns to her small town to care for her mother and face her past. I enjoyed this. The costumes are gorgeous. While it was often funny and it was also able the maintain darker aspect of story just as it was in the book. I mean the townspeople in this are just awful awful people. The movie also plays itself as a sort of mystery with flashbacks as the main character tries to remember the past, the reason why she had been sent away as a child.

Mademoiselle de Joncquières (2018)
A widow plans her revenge on a casanova. I didn't know much about the movie before seeing it and had thought it was more of a romantic drama. Turns out it's more of a romantic dramedy and I really enjoyed it. The revenge plot was quite clever.

I went for undercover cops with my picks today....but if I had gone for a non cop route it would have been Never Been Kiss and The East.

21 Jump Street (2012)

A pair of cops go undercover at a high school to catch a drug supplier. The movie was such a surprise for me. I didn't think I would like it, but I did. I found it really funny. Still haven't seen the sequel and would like to. 

Miss Congeniality (2000)
An FBI Agent goes undercover as a Miss United States beauty pageant contestant to prevent a bombing. I don't like it as much my other two picks, but it was still a fun comedy. It's sequel though was just not as good. 

Face/Off (1997)

An FBI agent undergoes a facial transplant surgery and assumes the identity of a terrorist to uncover the location of the bomb from the terrorist's brother. The whole facial transplant is just so silly, what about his body right? The plot may be ridiculous but it still is a fun action movie.

There are quite a lot of nannies/babysitters movies so I didn't have a hard time finding options. Most fall under either comedy or horror so I'm including picks from both genres.

Mary Poppins (1964)
Childhood favourite. I used to watch this a lot as kid. Love the songs.

Adventures in Babysitting (1987)

Another classic. I like it, but it used to be shown on TV so often I got sick of it.
 
The Babysitter (2017)
A boy secretly stays up past his bedtime to spy on what his babysitter's been up to and discovers her doing some satanic ritual. It's a horror comedy. At time over the top but it was funny, I rather like it.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Secret Agents/Spies

I just realized there was a similar theme last year. I totally overlooked it. Oh well, I suppose there are tons of TV series about secret agents or spies so there would be plenty to choose from. Here are my picks, the first three I like a lot.

Deutschland 83 (2015) & Deutschland 86 (2018) 

The Gist: The German drama follows an East German border guard who is forcibly recruited to be a spy and infiltrate the West German army. I really enjoyed this series. If you like 80s set cold war dramas then I definitely recommend this, especially the first season, Deutschland 83, which has more of the whole spy stuff.

The Man in the High Castle (2015 - )

The Gist: The series is set in a alternate history world where the Axis powers won World War II; the US has been divided into two with the East under Nazi occupation and the West under the Japanese and there is an illusive Man in the High Castle trading/collecting(?) mysterious films that give glimpses of a different outcome to the war that gives the resistance hope. This is another pick which I've picked earlier this year for Book-to-TV Adaptations. This is such an interesting series and gets better every season. The last time I talked about this series I mentioned the political intrigue and the science fiction elements in it. What I didn't mention is that it also has the secret agent/spy element where a Nazi agent infiltrates the Resistance making it a perfect pick for today's theme.

Patriot (2015 - )

The Gist: A depressed suicidal intelligence officer assumes a non-official cover in order to facilitate the purchase of a foreign election. Neither the title nor the plot particular interested me but because I read some good reviews I gave the series a try and it really surprised me. It is good...like really good. Patriot is a dark comedy drama thriller. The main character constantly finds himself moving from one bad situation to another, often due to the bad intelligence he's received, where nothing goes as planned, forcing him to fix one problem that only causes other unexpected problems that further need fixing. All of it is taking its toll and he is spiraling into depression. I know all of that sounds very dark and disturbing which it often is but the series also manages to be funny. I would actually describe Patriot as a little like In Bruges but with a secret agent instead of a hitman and with hints of Wes Anderson due to the oddness and quirkiness of many of its characters.

Traitors (2019 - )
The Gist: A British civil servant agrees to spy on her own government for the Americans in the aftermath of WWII. This was my latest watch. Of my picks today, I liked this the least but it was still a decent series. The story was interesting though I found it quite slow. Things only really start to move along half way through.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Movies Adapted from Movies of a Different Language

This is one of those repeated themes; the last time was in 2016. It's been 3 years since, so I thought I was going to have some options, but I really have watched very few remakes since then and had to pick an older watch with my last pick.

Le jeu (2018)
Remake of the Italian film Perfetti Sconosciuti. Three couples and their friend meet for dinner. Bored they decide to play a game where they share texts, emails and calls that pop up on their cell phones that ends disastrously. I really enjoyed this. It starts of light and fun. While it does get serious when secrets start to spill and their friendships and relationships get tested it still maintains some of its humor and never got overly dark.

 
A Bigger Splash (2015)
Remake of the French movie La Piscine. A rock star and her boyfriend's vacation in Italy is disrupted by the unexpected visit of an old friend and his daughter. This was an ok movie for me. In the beginning everyone is relatively friendly but there is clearly some issues between all of them and it slowly comes out and I did not expect the turn that it took.

The Invisible (2007)

Remake of the Swedish film Den Osynlige. A teenager becomes invisible after an attack . I saw this ages ago and the only reason it got pick today is because I just found out it was a remake. Truthfully I can't really remember much of it now other than I found it very disappointing and boring then. I wonder how I'd find it now.

I love receiving actual physical letters (bills and advertisements excluded of course). I also love nice stationery and that's one of the fun things about snail mail is that the writer's personality come through not only in the content of the letter but in the handwriting and the choice of writing materials. Then of course if the writer is from oceans away, it's nice to see the colourful pretty postage stamps, proof as how far and how long this physical thing has come to reach you. Anyway here are my picks of movies where letters play an important role.

84 Charing Cross Road (1987)
Based on a true story, its follows a New York City writer who begins a business correspondence with a second-hand bookstore in London for the purpose of purchasing books which eventually develops into real friendship between her and the staff of the store. While the movie is charming, it lacks an actual story I think. Not really a three act structure kind of thing. It's basically just these letters between the writer and the bookstore staff for nearly 20 years in which they tell each other what happens in their lives.

 
Dear Frankie (2004)
After responding to her son's letters pretending to be his father, a single mom hires a stranger to pose as him when meeting her son. I have not seen this in a long time. I don't really remember much of it now other than I really liked it when I saw it and would very much like to rewatch it some time.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)

A teen girl's secret love letters (ones that were never meant to be sent) get mysteriously mailed out to her crushes. I've picked this before for the Romantic Comedies theme. I enjoyed the movie a lot; it is cute, funny and the leads have great chemistry. I like the books and was so pleased that the movie ended up quite loyal to the source as well and that the sequel is in the works.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Movies You Have a Different Opinion After Rewatch

Today's theme is one by thevoid99. I don't often watch movies that I don't like again. The exception is when they are either classics or have an overwhelming number of great reviews, plus maybe I wasn't in the right mood then or just too young to understand so in those rare cases I give the movie a second chance several years later. Some of them I did end up liking or even love upon rewatch. While I think I'm forgetting some titles, here are the three that came immediately to mind.

West Side Story (1961)
I tried watching this about ten years ago, only a few minutes of it because I pretty much immediately disliked it. I think the movie opened with some gangster characters dancing and I was like seriously...gangsters twirling and dancing on pointe? To be fair, I'm not a big fan of musicals. A few years later, I don't know why but I popped the DVD and tried again and it turned out not to be soo bad, I can even say I like it. I like quite a number of the songs and while the whole gangsters ballet dancing thing is a bit weird, I can appreciate that all the dancing in the movie is well done and choreographed. The movie also seem very self aware of the world it lives in which is evident in the lines the characters say, there were moments that were absolute gems I thought and some of the issues that the movie touches on is still prevalent making the movie still feel very current.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
I think I tried watching this like 10 years ago, for only a few minutes and gave up. I had not understood what it was trying to say nor why people say it is funny. Tried again in 2017 and well I get it now.

Gosford Park (2001)

I first saw it it on DVD like 16 years ago and I did not get it at all. In fact I found it so boring and dull. A few years later I decided to give the movie a second try and I totally loved it. This is like if those old timey Agatha Christie type of murder mystery/detective story and the best Downton Abbey episode had a baby. I mean seriously, just imagine a more polished Downton Abbey with a much tighter story...that is Gosford Park. It such a well crafted film; sharp and funny and well acted by the fabulous cast. Of the three this is the one I like best and is one of my favorite movies.

I do not watch a lot of true crime so my options were limited.

Heavenly Creatures (1994)
 Two teen girls form an intense obsessive friendship and when one of their parents tries to separate them, they seek revenge. I don't remember much of the movie anymore, just that both leads, Winslet and Lynskey, were very good in it.

 
The Highwaymen (2019)
A pair of ex-Texas Rangers come out of retirement to catch Bonnie and Clyde. This was a very recent watch. It was an ok movie, not very memorable but it does have an interesting take of the Bonnie Clyde story choosing instead to tell the story from the perspective of the guys who are trying to catch them. The audience actually hardly get to see Bonnie and Clyde at all on screen.

Kidnapping Freddy Heineken (2015)

The movie follows the planning, execution and aftermath of the kidnapping of the Heineken beer tycoon. Once again, this is a sort of average unmemorable heist film. Still this was interesting in that I had not heard about the case before.

I knew this theme is going to be a tough one since there are not a lot of musical TV series which is why I've also included TV series that are music related so shows like Nashville and Empire would fall under them, though they don't end up on my list since they're a little too soap opera-ish for me and I'm not really a fan of the genre of music those series center on. Anyway here are my picks, two of which are musicals.

Galavant  (2015-2016)

The Gist: In a fairytale-esque world, a dashing knight, Galavant, goes on a quest to save his love who was kidnapped by an evil king. I've only seen the first season of this musical series and I enjoyed it a lot. It is soo charming and funny and the songs are really fun and catchy. I'd recommend this to those who like movies like The Princess Bride, Enchanted and Ella Enchanted.

 

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015-2019)

The Gist: Running into her summer camp ex boyfriend one day inspires a woman to abandon her life and job in New York to move to his hometown so that she can insert herself back in his life. This is another musical pick. I had seen like an episode of this and dropped it, thinking it wasn't something I enjoyed. Then it went on Netflix and I pretty much binged watch the earlier seasons. I have yet to watch the final season but I really enjoyed the first three seasons. It's a funny series and the musical numbers are fun, they often make pop culture references and sort of imitates popular music video styles while making fun of them. I also love that each season has a new opening theme musical number.

Mozart in the Jungle (2014-2018)

The Gist: This comedic drama follows the lives of the musicians of the New York Symphony just as a new conductor and a young oboist joins them. This is the only non-musical of my picks. I had known of this series but had not heard much about it (I'm of the opinion that Amazon series don't get talked about as much as Netflix series, or maybe it's just me not paying much attention to them.) and since I've never really been into classical music I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy this. Anyway, I'm so glad I decided to check this out. Mozart in the Jungle is very charming and gives such an interesting fun look at the inner workings of an orchestra. And yes...the music was also great.

This week is another tough one. It also seems like I am forgetting a movie that I've watched that will surely end up on everyone's picks.

The Help (2011)
Recent college graduate and aspiring writer returns home to care for her ill mother and decides to interview the black women who worked as the help for the white families in her hometown as part of her book. It's an ok movie for me, I didn't love it like a lot of other people.

 
Frost/Nixon (2008)
It's a dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and Richard Nixon. I really like this one. I had not seen the original interviews so had come into this unspoiled. It was all very interesting, the lead up to the interview and the interview itself. Sometimes I forget and refer to this movie as Frost vs Nixon because at times it does seem more fitting.

Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)

A man is interviewed by a reporter and tells his epic life story beginning in 18th century New Orleans when he was turned into a vampire . How can I not include this, Interview is in the title. Also, it is one of the best vampire movies ever and a favourite.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Let's Start at the End

Today's theme is all about those movies that start at the end. While they might not all be fully told in reverse, the opening shots are usually of those from the end of the story. It was really quite tricky trying to recall which movies were told that way.

Shimmer Lake (2017)
The local police investigate what happened in a recent bank heist that went wrong involving people in their small town. I really enjoyed this one. It's a small town mystery crime drama that also has a little bit of humor in it.

 
Arrival (2016)
A linguist works with the military to communicate with the alien lifeforms that have arrived in 12 spaceships around the world. This is one of my most recent watch and it's so different from what I expected it to be. I actually rather love it. It's such a quiet contemplative sci-fi movie.

Memento (2000)

A man with short-term memory loss attempts to track down his wife's murderer. Memento is here because as far as I remember it was told in reverse and that is the only thing I remember. I haven't seen this in nearly 2 decades and would love to rewatch it.

I thought I would have a lot more options to choose from, but I am having a hard time remembering major transformations.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014 & 2017)
If I had not known Karen Gillan plays Nebula, I would not have thought it was her by looking at the character.

 
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Tilda Swinton is no stranger to unrecognizable transformations and in this movie she becomes an elderly guest at the hotel.

Cloud Atlas (2012)

A lot of the actors in this played multiple characters and had some very big transformations.

If you think you've seen this theme before, you're right. We had one last year. This is one of those themes that I plan to do yearly. The past year though, unlike the previous year, I have less to choose from. Still here are the ones I've enjoyed.

Deutschland 83 (2015) & Deutschland 86 (2018)  

The Gist: The German drama follows Martin Rauch an East German border guard who is forcibly recruited to infiltrate the West German army. This is so interesting. If you like cold war spy action drama thrillers I highly recommend it. The first season takes place in 1983 and mostly follows Rauch in his attempts at gathering West German and NATO's military secrets. The second season takes place in 1986 and while it continues to have all the spy stuff, it also has a more expansive story exploring everything from the AIDs crisis and the East Germans dealings in African for ideological and economic reasons. I thought season two was stretching itself with all the different stuff that is going on but it was still an interesting eye opening watch. My guess is the producers of this series anticipate that some of the stuff that was covered in season 2 is not as well known as it has a companion documentary exploring how East Germany, on the brink of bankruptcy in the 80's, tried to stay afloat. I'm not sure but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that this is getting a third season titled Deutschland 89. Looking forward to it. 

Black Spot (2017 - ) 

The Gist: The small police force of a small French town on the edge of a mysterious forest is overwhelmed by the high crime/murder rate. I usually do not like the a-crime-an-episode sort of series, but there's something about this one that stands out from the rest. It's dark, suspenseful and continually has hints of a supernatural element. There's also an ongoing storyline that threads the episodes together involving the disappearance of the police inspector when she was a teenager, she retains no memory of her missing days, and the present day disappearance of the mayor's daughter which she thinks is linked. This is getting a second season though I am not sure when it will air. 

Money Heist  (2017 - )

The Gist: A Spanish series about a group of robbers robbing the mint. The robbers' plan is very complicated and involves them continually outmaneuvering and outwitting the authorities which made this a very entertaining action thriller. The third and I think final season is airing this year.

When I came up with this theme, I thought I had a few choices to choose from, I was wrong. I really haven't seen that many, but here are the ones I like.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
I have not seen this in a long time, so I can't remember much other than it's is a murder mystery set against the showbiz world. I do remember liking it and finding it funny and would like to rewatch this again some time.

 
Gone Baby Gone (2007)
This is one of my more recent watches. I totally did not guess the turn the story took.

The Nice Guys (2016)

I really enjoyed this. The banter between the characters are funny. I think that this could actually make a good TV series if they can cast decent actors to fill the roles played by Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in the movie.
