Thursday Movie Picks #295: Seven Deadly Sins Edition - Gluttony

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Seven Deadly Sins Edition - Gluttony

---

Welcome back to the Seven Deadly Sins edition and today's theme is Gluttony. This is a tough one, because it seems quite similar to Greed. But here is what I understand to be the difference: gluttony refers to over consumption while greed refers to over accumulation. So with that, I could have gone a few different ways...movies about over consumption of food, alcohol, drugs, etc. Instead, I'm going to go the supernatural horror route and here are my picks.

Interview with the Vampire (1994)
Lestat creates the child vampire Claudia and she becomes a talented little vampire luring victims with her little girl charms.

30 Days of Night (2007)
A coven of vampire kills a whole town during their 30 days of night.

Jennifer's Body (2009)
In this horror comedy a cheerleader develops an insatiable appetite for boys.

  1. Interesting direction to take this.

The only one I've seen, and honestly the only one I'll probably ever see not being much for vampire flicks, is Interview with a Vampire which was okay and would have been much better with someone besides Cruise in the lead.

I struggled a bit with this week’s theme too but then happened upon my first pick, which until now I hadn’t known existed. It’s a British comedy that consists of a series of vignettes for each of the sins and it’s provided me with at least one title for each transgression for the rest of the year!

The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins (1971)-Gluttony: The manufacturer of dietary biscuits Slimmo exhorts that you can exist on 8 of them a day while being a closet glutton with rich food hidden throughout his office. When he inevitably starts to gain weight the company doctor limits him to two biscuits a day but everywhere he looks he sees food! We follow his comic adventures as he tries to sneak whatever tidbits he can. But he pays for it in the end. Co-written by Monty Python’s Graham Chapman.

The Big Feast (aka La Grande Bouffe) (1973)-Four middle aged disenchanted French men of the bourgeoisie (including Marcello Mastroianni and Philippe Noiret) gather at the villa of one of their number with the express goal of eating themselves to death. Looking to indulge to the utmost they include three prostitutes in the party and from then on its food then sex, sex and food, sex while eating food and finally just food and more food. You might never want to eat again once it ends.

Cool Hand Luke (1967)-Non conformist Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) is behind bars on a Florida chain gang but his spirit isn’t imprisoned. While he is a thorn in the side of the guards he becomes a source of inspiration to the other inmates particularly after accepting a spur of the moment bet to eat 50 hard-boiled eggs in an hour. After he achieves the gluttonish goal he lays on a table splayed Christ like suffering but venerated.

    1. I've seen Cool Hand Luke and remember that scene. I really don't like watching eating contests...how can people eat so much.

  2. "Interview With The Vampire" is a favourite, but I haven't seen the other two. Love your take on the prompt! ☺ Nothing more gluttonous than flesh-eating vampires. Thanks for hosting this blogfest.

    1. Well Jennifer isn't really a vampire, she became some sort of a demon after being a sacrifice in a ritual that went wrong.

  3. Lots of interesting vampire movies! I've heard of Jennifer's Body, but I never got the chance to watch that movie. I need to watch it sometime!

  4. I like all three of your picks! Jennifer's Body has really grown a bit of a cult following over these past few years. I'm glad.

    1. I like Jennifer's Body and was surprised when it wasn't a hit when it came out, but had thought then that it would eventually have some cult following in the future...so I am like you glad...that it has now.

  5. Great take on this theme and I never even thought about drugs etc.. because, otherwise, I would have chosen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I only have seen Interview with the Vampire which was pretty good overall. I don't care to see 30 Nights but your last one sounds like a fun horror flick

    1. Consumption is the keyword and you'd really have a lot of movies to choose from.

  6. I think, this is the first time I acutally saw all your picks!

  7. I love your interpretation of the sin and your theme within the theme! I have seen just two of these but Interview with a Vampire is like.. a classic of the 90's I need to revisit soon!
