Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. Your picks can either be favourites/best, worst, hidden gems, or if you're up to it one of each. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is the Valentine's Edition: Star-Crossed Lovers

---

A quick Google on "star-crossed lovers" is one where their relationship is doomed to fail due to external forces. So as long as it fails, you're good.

I started this week's picks with some bad star-crossed lovers movies but have since flipped and went with the ones that I like/love.

Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Well of course I had to begin with a Shakepeare adaptation and had to choose one. I really love this version, the more I see it the more I love it. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as Romeo and Juliet were really good in this, they gave it their all and so did everyone in it bringing the characters to life in a contemporary setting. Have you seen the more recent 2013 version, that one was so dull and soulless.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Satine and Christian make up the ill fated couple in this and once again another Baz Luhrmann movie and another favourite. Didn't think the whole reworked contemporary pop songs would work in it but they did! I heart them.

The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.”  - part of the quote from Shakespeare Julius Caesar that became the title of the book. The star-crossed lovers in this are two teens who meet at a cancer support group - so you know how it ends.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  2. Romeo + Juliet is so underrated. Love that version of the story. I didn't much care for The Fault in Our Stars. Strangely, I haven't seen Moulin Rouge.

    1. It is. I think people tend to dismiss it because of it's contemporary setting, it's use of pop songs, the film style and of course it starred two teen idols of that time.

  3. Three perfect picks. Baz's Romeo + Juliet is such a brilliant adaptation.

  4. Out of these, Moulin Rogue is my favorite. I'd love to watch that film again. Fault surprised me. I wasn't expecting to enjoy that at all.

  5. I liked this version of R&J much more than I expected to, it was interesting how the director was able to reshape the material without destroying the core story. Moulin Rouge! was a visual treat but I've only watched it the once. I've learned from the other films I've seen her in that I can not abide Shailene Woodley so I've avoided Fault.

    1. Ahh... me too. People seem to like her like they do Jennifer Lawrence, since they both did the popular YA dystopian flicks. I'm not quite charmed. I think she sort of looks exhausted in a few films I've seen.

  8. I have only seen Moulin Rouge and thought it was good even if over the top but that is Baz for you. I have not seen the other 2. My favourite Romeo & Juliet is with Olivia Hussey directed by Franco Zefferelli

I really like the Franco Zefferelli Romeo and Juliet one too.

  9. Good picks! I've seen all three, and, while I wouldn't count any of them as favorites, they all have something.
