Thursday Movie Picks #55: All in the Family Edition: Twins

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. Your picks can either be favourites/best, worst, hidden gems, or if you're up to it one of each. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is All in the Family Edition: Twins

Every last Thursday for the first nine months of 2015 I'm running the All in the Family Edition and this is the seventh theme for the edition. Here's some of my favorites in random order:

The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)
I don't know why, but I sort of love this movie. I suppose it's the the period drama thing, the four Musketeers appeal and the fact that there was such a masked prisoner (although not iron) who's identity was never discovered. Now I wonder if there ever was a first born of a reigning monarch that was ever a twin. Can you imagine the succession nightmare? Oh and the movie has such a beautiful score too.

The Pretty One (2013)
I enjoyed this quirky dark comedy where once again we have another actor playing both twins. In it Zoe Kazan plays shy and insecure Laurel who assumes the identity of her identical twin sister Audrey, the pretty outgoing one who everyone loves, when she dies in a car crash they both were in.

Twin Falls Idaho (1999)
It's been a long time since I've seen this and I definitely need a rewatch, but I remember loving it. The movie was strange, dark and ultimately very heartbreaking. In it Mark and Michael Polish, real life identical twins, plays conjoined twins who goes in search of their mother who gave them up when they were children.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  2. I remember liking The Man in the Iron Mask, but I'm fuzzy on the details since it's been so long since I've seen it. Haven't seen Twin Falls Idaho and not even heard of The Pretty One. Both sound intriguing. Great work.

  3. I found your blog through Drew and have been on the sidelines for quite the while. I hope you don't me in joining in on the fun and will post tomorrow morning. I have not see 2 of the films but have seen The Man in the Iron mask which I think is better than I initially gave it credit for. It's not the best but it is fun and I do love Musketeers

  4. I finally return to this series after 2 months of hiatus; and the theme was a bit difficult, but I found some mainstream cliches that suit it well.
Anyway, I'm impressed with those twins from The Man in the Iron Mask! Always in first choice as I recall

  5. It's been a long time since I've seen Man in the Iron Mask. I don't remember liking it very much. The last two I haven't heard of, but they sound like films I'd enjoy. I put them in my Netflix queue.

    1. Haha, I don't imagine a lot of people like tMitIM, but it is the sort of thing I like, Period Drama + Adventure + Adaptation. And honestly it isn't bad.

  6. I guess I owe my mom an apology. I told her we were doing twins this week and she suggested Man in the Iron Mask and I told her she must be thinking of another movie. I've actually never heard of your other two choices. you really stumped me a bit this week.

  7. I liked this version of Man in the Iron Mask, it's certainly a durable story I think I've seen about five different takes on the tale, and this one has a terrific cast. I've seen Twin Falls, Idaho but so long ago I don't remember much except that its a perfect fit for the theme. The Pretty One is new to me.
