Thursday Movie Picks #260: Parenthood

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share your movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Parenthood

---

This was quite a tough theme. We had a somewhat familiar theme back in 2015, but that focused more on the relationship between the parent and child characters. While I suppose this parenthood theme is more about raising children and the challenges and choices parents make to do so. Anyway here are my picks:

Captain Fantastic (2016)
After his wife's death, a father who has been raising and homeschooling his kids off the grid is forced to reenter the world and rethink the way he has been raising his kids. It was sweet, funny and even little sad at times; overall a pretty good watch.

This Is 40 (2012)
Follows a couple who are about to turn 40, as they raise their kids and manage their businesses. I really enjoyed this, I thought it was funny. Quite surprise it has only a 6.2 on IMDB.

The Incredibles (2004)
Follows the lives of ex superheores now trying to live the quiet suburban life with their kids until a villain emerges forcing them back into action.  I love this movie. It is so sweet and funny. Pixar does the whole human drama thing very well (even when the characters are non humans in other movies) and it's evident here as well with how the parents try to raise their extraordinary children.

  1. I went in a completely different route and explored the theme of parenthood, where the child is ripped away from a parent. Morbid, you could say. I like your picks though. I haven't seen the first one yet but the other two are wonderful.

  2. I've only seen the first, though I heard of them all, and while it was imperfect it was an okay film. Viggo was excellent in the lead.

I'll get around to This is 40 one day but The Incredibles is animated and I avoid those films like the plague.

I went in a somewhat lighthearted vein at least with my second two, the first is a comedy/drama.

Parenthood (1989)-Ron Howard directed this gentle, insightful comic drama of a group of siblings-Gil (Steve Martin), Helen (Dianne Wiest), Susan (Harley Jane Kozak) and the ne’er do well Larry (Tom Hulce)-their parents (Jason Robards & Eileen Ryan), their somewhat dotty grandmother (Helen Shaw) and their various spouses and offspring (including Mary Steenburgen, Rick Moranis, Martha Plimpton and a very young Joaquin Phoenix) as they navigate the big and little issues of child rearing.

Mr. Mom (1983)-When automobile engineer Jack (Michael Keaton) is downsized his wife, Caroline (Teri Garr), returns to work as an ad exec with Jack taking over as homemaker and caring for their three kids. Though he eventually gets the hang of it there are many hilarious misadventures beforehand. But then tensions start to rise between Jack & Caroline as her work demands increase and his jealousy rises. Daffy and fun.

Father of the Bride (1950)-When the apple of Stanley Banks’s (Spencer Tracy) eye, his daughter Kay (Elizabeth Taylor-breathtakingly beautiful), announces at dinner her engagement to Buckley Dunstan (Don Taylor) he’s thrown for a loop. But he discovers that the realization that Kay is grown up is nothing compared to the problems he encounters planning her wedding! As things get hectic, Stan's wife, Ellie (Joan Bennett), tries to be the calm in the center of the storm, but even she might not be a match to Stan’s jitters. Released to coincide with Elizabeth Taylor’s first (disastrous) marriage to Nicky Hilton this was an enormous hit.

    1. I've seen your last one. The other two I might have but just too young to remember the details.

I'm not into animated movies either but Pixar films are just way ahead of the rest. They just so good at doing drama. They definitely not just going for cute.

  3. I've seen all three of your picks this week. I really liked Captain Fantastic, Incredibles is fine too but I disliked This Is 40.

  4. I think this is the first week where I've seen all 3 of your picks! I didn't like This Is 40 when I saw it but then I was still living with my parents with no real responsibilities. I might appreciate it more now.
