This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Family

---

I had to think about this quite a bit. For some reason I'm not quite remembering as many Family TV shows that I've probably seen. Here are the ones that I do remember and love.

Jane the Virgin (2014 - )
The series follows Jane, who get mistakenly artificially inseminated. So ignore the lame basic premise and super awful title that I'm sure has driven some potential viewers away...I almost didn't watch it too. This series is so so good. It's sweet, it's funny, it has fun with itself with the whole telenovella stuff...it really has a good sense of humor and it is such a heartwarming dramedy. This is also the only family friendly series depicting a family today.

Peaky Blinders (2013 - )
Love this series. I was one of my picks for the period drama TV series theme. The gist - set after World War 1, it follows the fictional Shelby family as they run their legitimate and criminal business. The series feels like a modern crime drama series with its pacing and style...that and the modern rock music used throughout that fits in so well.

Animal Kingdom (2016 - )
The gist: when a teen boy's mom dies, he goes to live with the family he has never met: grandma and four uncles who all lead a life of crime specializing in heists. If you've seen Animal Kingdom the movie and like it or love Peaky Blinders, you should definitely check out Animal Kingdom the TV series. I enjoyed the first season, but I think part of me was also preoccupied in comparing the movie and the TV series. However, the second series has gone way past the timeline/material depicted in the movie that it was fun seeing what new stuff the series was coming up with. Thus I found the second season a much more addictive watch, especially to see where everyone's alliance lies

  2. All good picks but I haven't seen any of them. I saw the film version of Animal Kingdom though.

SO many shows to choose from in this week's theme so I decided that all my picks had to contain the key theme word which narrowed the field considerably.

Family (1976-1980)-Gentle family drama of the problems big and small of an upper middle class family, lawyer dad Doug Lawrence (James Broderick-Matthew’s father) wife Kate (Sada Thompson) and their three children Nancy (Meredith Baxter again), Willie (Gary Frank) and sensitive Letitia “Buddy” (Kristy McNicol), living in a small California town. Much of the power of the series came from its refusal to go for big showy emotions rather taking a naturalistic approach to the various issues that present themselves. Very well-acted.

Family Ties (1982-1989)-Former liberal flower children of the 60’s Steven and Elyse Keaton (Michael Gross & Meredith Baxter) are now middle class parents raising their three (eventually four) very different children in the Reagan 80’s. There’s the youngest, tomboy Jennifer (Tina Yothers), middle child acquisitive somewhat ditzy Mallory (Justine Bateman) and oldest son strongly conservative money hungry Alex (the series breakout star Michael J. Fox). The series looks with gentle humor and insight at the culture clashes that constantly erupt within the household through the years.

All in the Family (1971-1979)-Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor), his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton) who Archie semi affectionately calls “Dingbat” their daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers) and her husband Mike Stivic (Rob Reiner) who Archie far less affectionately calls “Meathead” live together often disharmoniously in Queens, New York. Archie is a firmly opinionated bigot and his daughter and especially his son-in-law equally fierce liberals so their exchanges are often incendiary. When this debuted in ’71 it caused a revolution in how TV comedy was seen, to this point it had been dominated by shows similar to Father Knows Best and even more progressive ones such as Julia with Diahann Carroll dealt with gently humorous situations. But All in the Family took aim at the hot topics of the time in a more realistic way.

    1. Animal Kingdom exceeds expectations, I did not expect to like it as much as the movie.
