Animated Movies

This week theme somehow seems oddly familiar, but after checking past themes, we've really not done this theme before. Now I think I've mentioned on this blog that I don't watch a lot animated films anymore; so I'm not quite caught up on the best animated films of today. My picks will have to come from the pool of films that I watched as a kid and the kid me pretty much loved all the animated feature films I had seen then. I thought it'll be fun to also do a theme within a theme thus I'm picking animated films centering on non human characters.

The Land Before Time (1988)
I watch this movie quite a number of times as a kid especially since it played on TV a lot back in the 90s so it was unavoidable. Anyone remembers the theme song If We Hold On Together sung by Diana Ross?

The Lion King (1994)
Love, love The Lion King. The movie just gorgeous with a great soundtrack. What is it with kids movies scarring children with scenes of a parents death?

Toy Story (1995, 1999, 2010)
I think I really did grow up with these movies. It had been the first CGI movie I had seen way back when it was first released and from what I understand it was actually the first full length CGI feature ever. I find each subsequent Toy Story is more emotional than the one before despite being essentially about the lives of toys...Pixar is so good at making full fleshy characters from its non human characters.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  1. YAY!!! Love this theme so much. I used one of these...but I cheated and...picked SIX!!! LOL, I was going to go with the Toy Story franchise, but I decided not to since I've talked about them a lot already.

    1. I guess it would depend the time you grew up in. But it is a dinosaur movie and kids love dinosaur movies so definitely a good pick for a family movie night.

  4. Love these picks! Land Before Time is such a classic, then those awful sequels came around. I didn't get to use the Lion King this week because I used it once before, but will always be one of my favorite animated flicks as well.

    1. I don't know if I've seen any of the sequels although I know there were many.

  5. The Land Before Time!!! Thanks for the memories.
The Lion King would have had to bump one of my 3 from my list except I think I used it for Father-Son Movies.
Is it just me or does the Toy Story series get better and better?

    1. I know right! And isn't there going to be a fourth one? Soon Andy himself will be a father and picking toys for his children.

  6. I feel like a grump, I'm just not an animation fan. I'm familiar with all your picks but have never made it though any. I've tried with Toy Story three times but I just hate it. I will say my nieces and nephews love all your picks. I struggled to come up with three and ended up bending the rules a bit on my first but the other two are strictly animated and which I do have some affection for.

    My three:

Pink Floyd-The Wall (1982)-Isolated from everyone a rock star quickly descends into madness. Not wholly animated this strange film starts off with a live action segment then after about twenty minutes is interspersed with animated sequences, often quite disturbing, all set to Pink Floyd’s music.

The Rescuers (1977)-Two mice on the Rescue Aid Society, Bernard and Miss Bianca voiced by the odd couple pairing of Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor, attempt to rescue little Penny who has been kidnapped by the evil Madame Medusa and her gang as they search for treasure in Devil's Bayou. Fun if minor Disney is set apart by the great voice work of the unexpectedly simpatico Newhart and Gabor and the awesome Geraldine Page as Medusa.

101 Dalmatians (1961)-Cruella de Vil wants a Dalmatian coat and she and her evil minions will do anything to get one. Adult Dalmatians Pongo and Perdita set out to rescue the title pups from the fate she has planned. Will she be stopped in time? Classic Disney.

    1. Somewhat familiar with The Rescuers but can't remember if I've seen.
      What? You hate Toy Story?

  7. For some reason I have not seen The Land Before Time even though I LOVE the theme song The Land Before Time! Great picks.

  8. I'll always have fond memories of The Land Before Time, such a sad start though, alway sused to make me cry. Didn't bother with the sequels though. Disney is always great (but avoided them in my picks). Toy Story, I always say, its not for kids, its for us, we were there at the very beginning, back in 1995! Love love The lion King, one of the first films I remember seeing at the cinema. Great picks!

  9. The Land Before Time is one of my earliest movie memories. I haven't seen it since then. Should revisit after all these years. The Lion King is certainly a classic but never really worked that well for me. I think I was at an odd age when it came out. Toy Story came out the same year I think and really worked for me. Go figure. I absolutely adore the first and third Toy Story. I just like 2. Great picks!

    1. Hmm...well Toy Story is a contemporary tale so I can see why you found it easier to like.
While The Lion KIng is Hamlet set in an African savannah.

  10. The only film that is fresh in my mind in Toy Story, which I love with third being my favourite. The only thing I know about Diana Ross was her screw up the opening ceremony of the 1994 World Cup, she was supposed to kick the ball into the net which would then split open...she missed. The perils of live TV.

    1. Haha I didn't that about Diana Ross. She probably didn't get a chance to practice.
