This week's Thursday Movie Picks is The Mrs Robinsons [Suggested by Getter]

---

This week's theme is a suggestion by Getter. The title of the theme is of course in reference to Mrs Robinson from the Graduate so this theme is about movies that feature older women in a relationship with much younger men. I tried to pick less obvious ones like The Graduate and Harold and Maude and here's what I came up with that I like:

The Good Girl (2002)
A bored store clerk has an affair with a colleague who see's Holden Caulfield in himself. I really like this. I don't think Aniston does a lot of dramas, but she was good in this.

The Door in the Floor (2004)
A writer's assistant has an affair with his boss's wife who is still grieving over a family tragedy. It's been so long since I've seen this, that I don't remember much so it's funny that I saw this as being categorized as both a comedy and drama on IMDB, when all I remember is people being very sad.

Notes on a Scandal (2006)
A teacher has an affair with her student and her colleague holds that knowledge over her. This movie is soo good and great performances by Dench and Blanchett.

Chéri (2009)
An aging courtesan at the start of the 20th century starts what was supposed to be a short affair with her friend's son but it ended up lasting several years. I don't remember much now, but I know I enjoyed it. I was very light and funny and the costumes were gorgeous.

  1. I want to see Notes on a Scandal and keep forgetting about it. I love both actresses. The last film sounds good too.

  2. I liked but didn't love Good Girl, Door in the Floor and Cheri. The last was probably my favorite of the three but that was more the performers and the costumes than the middling story.

I HATED Notes on a Scandal though I'll admit the acting was strong.

Amazing how much leaner the choices are for this theme than say an older man/younger woman one. But I still found three:

Summer of ’42 (1971)-Teen Herman Raucher (Gary Grimes) is spending the titular summer on Nantucket Island with pals Oscy (Jerry Houser) and Benji (Oliver Conant) just after America has joined in World War II. He meets Dorothy (Jennifer O'Neill), a young newlywed whose husband is away in the war. As his friends awkwardly attempt to woo girls their own age, Herman slowly befriends the older woman and finds himself becoming increasingly in love with her, but a sudden tragedy may change everything. Nostalgic and bittersweet this was a huge hit upon its release.

White Palace (1990)-Lost in grief at the recent loss of his wife young staid ad exec Max Baron (James Spader) meet earthy 40ish wild child waitress Nora Baker (Susan Sarandon) and the attraction is immediate. They embark on a steamy affair but soon enough their class and age differences become an obstacles.

Afterglow (1997)-A roundelay of unwitting changing partners. Contractor Lucky Mann (Nick Nolte) is a serial philanderer who of late has become involved with unhappy young housewife Marianne (Lara Flynn Boyle). Unbeknownst to either Marianne’s business obsessed but equally unhappy husband Jeffrey (Jonny Lee Miller) meets and falls for Lucky’s wife, the troubled Phyllis (Julie Christie) a former minor star who is wrestling with demons of her own. Odd, opaque comic drama but Julie is sensational and was Oscar nominated.

  3. We both picked Notes on a Scandal this weak and I can't believe I didn't think of Door in the Floor.

  4. We match with The Good Girl but I'm actually a bit disappointed at myself for not having seen all your other picks. Shame on me!

  5. We match on The Good Girl. I love Notes on a Scandal and I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it. I'm fairly sure I saw The Door in the Floor but I can't remember anything from it.

    1. Like I said previously, I'm quite surprise anyone had seen The Door in the Floor...it just seemed like a very under the radar movie.
