This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Book to TV Adaptations

I'm picking series that I've watched last year that I like but have not read the books/comics.

The Alienist (2018 - )
The Gist: Set in 19th century NYC, a psychologist, a newspaper illustrator and a secretary with the NYPD investigate a serial killer who is murdering street children. I've picked this last month and once again today because it fits the theme well. This is getting a second season so I'm looking forward to it

Anne with an E (2017 - )
The Gist: The series follows the life of a young orphan girl adopted by two elderly siblings who live on Prince Edward Island. It's getting a third season and continues to be good. I would say the second season is much less darker in tone than the first.

The End of the F***ing World (2017 - )
The Gist: A boy who thinks he's a psychopath and the new girl at school run away together so that the girl can search for her real father. This is a very dark and sharply funny series. This series is also getting a second season which was a surprise since I thought one of the characters was mortally wounded...but perhaps not?

The Haunting of Hill House (2018 - )
The Gist: A broken family confronts the haunting memories of their time at Hill House after a tragedy. This is for me the best new 2018 series and one of the best ghost stories that really takes its time to tell the story. Anyway this is getting a second season too which is another surprise. I mean wasn't the just one season perfect on its own. However, apparently it is going to be an anthology series, so perhaps it's a haunting of a new place?

The Man in the High Castle (2015 - )
The Gist: The series is set in a alternate history world where the Axis powers won World War II; the US has been divided into two with the East under Nazi occupation and the West under the Japanese and there is an illusive Man in the High Castle trading/collecting(?) mysterious films that give glimpses of a different outcome to the war that gives the resistance hope. I have not picked this series before so have yet had the chance to talk about it so bear with me. This series is soo soo interesting and gets better each season. There's so much political intrigue, a lot of it stems from Hitler being sick and dying so the senior Nazi leaders are all vying to be his successor while the rest of the party are divided trying to align themselves with who they think would succeed which is treacherous. Hitler's imminent death also means that the alliance with the Japanese is in peril which puts the Western resistance in a conundrum, should they continue their attacks to weaken the Japanese which could also leave them open to an invasion and occupation by possibly a worse master. The series is an alternate history political thriller drama but there's a also a science fiction element to the story that is so intriguing with the reels of films that is explored more and more in the second and third season. The series will air its fourth and final season this year and I can't wait!

  1. LOVE The Alienist, such a brilliant story and great characters. Hoping theres another series but for some reason felt that it was a one off. Love Daniel Brühl too, so pleased to see him front and center. Anne with an E was difficult to watch, she's so over dramatic and the show has gone waaaaaay off book BUT I liked series 2 a bit better. I was so excited about Man in the High Castle, mainly because I loved the concept but couldnt get into the book but I lost interest mid series 2, maybe I'll pick it up again now it has an ending.

    1. The Alienist - Well there had been news that it is getting a season 2. The book also had a sequel so season two could be an adaptation of it.

Anne with an E - I've not read the books, but I've always thought the character was supposed to be talkative and dramatic, she was the same in the 1980s miniseries as well, so I didn't find that this Anne over did it. I actually liked the first season a lot. I thought it showed layers to Anne's character, the unwanted lonely bullied orphan, which I had not seen before in the 1980s adaptation.

The Man in the High Castle - Have not read the book but would like to. I'd say season 2 is a little slow and I was quite disappointed two of the main characters did not share any screen time together so I understand why you stop. But season three is better I think. More of the sci-fi elements are explored and there are major character deaths, one which was quite a shock to me with how quickly things took a turn in the scene.

  2. The Man in the High Castle is the only show you mentioned that I've seen already. It's so much better than the book, and I really excited to find out what else is coming on that front!

  5. I didn't know The Alienist and End of the F**king World were based on books. I still need to see both though. The Haunting of Hill House is the only I've seen and I loved it. It is so much better than the novel.
