Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Movies about Addiction (Suggested by Wendell)

This week's theme is a suggestion from Wendell@DellonMovies. It's a tough topic for me; not that I can't think of any, just that I can't say I really like them much. Still I'm going with the 3 that I suppose I like better than the rest.

Smashed (2012)
In a lot of movies, the person with the addiction is like the only screw up. I think the most interesting part in this one is that the people in the lead character's life are pretty much functional alcoholics too; so much so that she doesn't, nor does anyone else, realise her alcoholism has gotten really bad until it's put her in embarrassing and dangerous situations.

Flight (2012)
Has a premise that is sort of like Sully, but it's not a true story and with the alcoholism bit.

Trainspotting (1996)
I really don't remember much of this. I think there was a freaky hallucination scene of a baby crawling around or was that in Requiem of a Dream? Anyway, there is a sequel coming up, so I guess I'll be seeing this again before watching the new one.

  1. I also chose Smashed and Trainspotting. Great films. Flight, I didn't care for aside from the first 10 minutes and the last 5. Those were where Denzel was the best.

  2. Can't believe I didn't think of Flight. I thought Denzel was great and the movie itself pretty good.

  3. Smashed was good but very depressing. Classic Trainspotting! Yes it has a bit with a baby crawling on the ceiling. It also has the worst toilet in Scotland.

  4. Haven't seen Smashed but it sounds somewhat like The Days of Wine and Roses with Jack Lemmon & Lee Remick which was a sad and harrowing film. I'm not much of a Denzel fan but Flight wasn't bad, that opening segment was very gripping. I D-E-T-E-S-T-E-D Trainspotting and the idea of watching a sequel gives me the heebie-jeebies.

  5. I haven't seen the first one but I enjoyed Flight and thought Denzel was excellent. trainspotting is good but not sure I want to watch it again. It was just filthy and that toilet scene almost made me sick

  6. Trainspotting is fantastic! That toilet scene was disgusting though.

  7. I really need to see Smashed. Have heard great things. Love the work James Ponsoldt has done thus far. Flight made my list too. Easily one of the best on this theme.
