This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Halloween Edition - Science Fiction Horror
---
Hey
it's October and the whole of this month I'm running the Halloween
Edition. Take a look at what's in store for the rest of the weeks.
October 13 - Halloween Edition: Creature/Monster Features (NO Aliens/Vampires/Zombies/Werewolves) (Example of Creature/Monsters: Cujo)
October 20 - Halloween Edition: Science Fiction Horror
October 27 - Halloween Edition: Epidemic/Pandemic/Outbreak
Black Mirror 3rd season will be out this week, so it's the perfect time for a science fiction horror theme.
Ex Machina (2015)
A young programmer is invited to a remote facility to participate in a psychological test with an android. I love that we're constantly trying to make out what and who exactly is being tested.
Daybreakers (2009)
Set in the near future, vampires have become the dominant race and are trying to find a solution to their food supply problem as the human race is on the brink of extinction. While the movie doesn't have a great last act, it does create an imaginative future vampire world - like how does a vampire walk about or drive around town during the day?
The Fly (1986)
I'm struggling to find a third pick so I'm just going with this, The Fly, which I haven't watch in ages and probably never will again. I saw it as a kid; this and Alien totally freaked me out.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

I was actually quite impressed with Day breakers as a whole. Not seen The Fly too scared. And I did not enjoy ex machina but it fits well here
ReplyDeleteDaybreakers - me too. The thing I didn't like was the last act.
DeleteEx Machina does work well here because it is horrific when one thinks about it. I haven't seen the vampire film but it sounds pretty good....why don't they go to a blood bank and not kill humans?? I picked the original The Fly but haven't seen the remake-too chicken
ReplyDeleteDaybreakers - I can't remember the specifics, but I think at the initial outbreak things likely got crazy, there were probably a lot of attacks on humans. Some died. The ones that survived became vampires themselves and were now the majority species. The ones that didn't turn became the blood bank hooked up to machines but the point of the story we enter is when I think the blood bank was being drained into extinction, there just wasn't enough humans to support the much larger vampire population.
DeleteLOVE Ex Machina. I wouldn't have thought of that for horror, even though Ada is pretty horrifying
ReplyDeleteEven before I saw the ending, the premise alway felt like that of a horror movie - something like The Haunting, House on Haunted Hill and And Then There Were None, where some people were invited to some isolated place for some mysterious weird reason. So it looked really bad, to me, for Caleb especially since unlike those movies, he was the only person invited.
DeleteDitto what Britt said about Ex Machina. I also love very The Fly. I suspect it will be popular this week. I even like Daybreakers. Actually, I liked it a lot until, like you said, last act. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI also watched The Fly as a kid and I loved it. I re-watched it not a long time ago and I still love it.
ReplyDeleteI'm with the others, I would have never considered Ex Machina a horror but it has a horrific ending for sure (in a good way). The fly is amazing
ReplyDeleteThis isn't one of my favored genres but this version of The Fly was one of my choices as well, a well done flick with an exceptional performance by Jeff Goldblum. I've also seen Ex-Machina but wasn't very impressed by it. Haven't seen Daybreakers.
