A quick note before we begin. I found a few posts last Thursday that didn't have any link back. If you are participating in Thursday Movie Picks, please be reminded to put a Clickable Link on your post to my blog. I think it's only fair since you are given an opportunity to put your own clickable links on my posts.

- back to today's picks -

I didn't think I've watched a lot of wedding movies, but I checked my watched list and turns out I did. Although I can't say I enjoyed a great many. Here are the ones I did like.

The Wedding Singer (1998)
I haven't seen this in ages but I remember enjoying it and it's just about the only Adam Sandler comedy I've seen that I like. The 80's bit was fun too.

My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
Another one I haven't seen in a long time. Quite surprised the IMDB rating is 6.3 because I thought it was one the better chick flick movies, well at least for me. I also always wondered why they had two male leads who looked quite a alike, I think it probably confused some people.

Mamma Mia! (2008)
I thought this would be terrible. I mean the plot is terrible; it's obviously just a reason to work in the songs into the story. But it's really not that bad. It's just a very light fluffy movie and was actually fun. The singing was mostly ok too except for the potential dads.

  1. It's been years since I've seen The Wedding Singer, but I liked it. I didn't like My Best Friends Wedding, but I share your thoughts on Mamma Mia. That movie was a lot more tolerable than I thought it would be. I enjoyed it.

  3. I LOVE The Wedding Singer! It's so sweet-natured and this first pairing of Sandler and Drew Barrymore is their best. Loved all the effort they put into the details of getting the 80's down. If Sandler had used the same restraint he does here his movies might not have devolved into the unwatchable messes they became.

I'm also very fond of My Best Friend's Wedding even though Julia Roberts' character would be a deplorable person in real life. In a movie though most of her antics are amusing and Rupert Everett gives a gem of a performance.

I thought Mamma Mia! was a dreadful film despite liking most of the cast and music.

Since there are tons of movies on the subject I tried to find three that were lesser known. These are what I came up with.

A Wedding (1978)-Robert Altman directed film with his usual kaleidoscopic cast ranging from Lillian Gish to Desi Arnaz, Jr. of the friends and family of a young couple who intermingle at a mansion before, during and after the ceremony, not always harmoniously. Not one of his wholly successful pictures but if you’re a fan of the director worth seeking out.

Royal Wedding (1951)-Tom and Ellen Bowen (Fred Astaire & Jane Powell), an American brother & sister dance team, are headed to a London booking that coincides with the celebrations of the upcoming 1947 marriage of then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. During the sea voyage Ellen meets Lord Brindale (Peter Lawford) and falls for him. Upon arrival Tom and Ellen begin planning their show where Tom meets the elegant Anne Ashmond (Sarah Churchill-Winston’s daughter) during auditions. So smitten is he with her he literally dances on the ceiling. Many memorable dance numbers later this MGM musical culminates in many nuptials.

It Had to Be You (1947)-Daffy comedy starring Ginger Rogers as a socialite notorious for leaving men at the altar. On her fourth fiancĂ© she’s certain she’s found the right man until on a train trip another turns up in her dreams claiming to be her true love. Returning home she’s flustered to discover the man really exists, or is he a figment of her imagination? Sort of a precursor to Runaway Bride with a twist.

    1. MBFW - I so agree with you. What Julia Robert's character did was just so mean.

  4. I've seen bits and pieces of The Wedding Singer and what I saw was OK. I've seen Mamma Mia in the same way since my wife and daughters watched it a few times. I just couldn't make myself sit down for that one. Haven't seen My Best Friends Wedding at all. Maybe one day. BTW, 6.3 on IMDb might actually make it one of the higher rated rom-coms, lol.

    1. Wedding movies tend to be aimed at the female audience and Mamma Mia being also a musical filled with ABBA music which isn't for everyone - I can understand why you can't stand it.

MBFW - Oh I never really though about it being one of the better rated rom-coms on IMDB. I guess people just don't rate rom-coms high? I think I read a bit of an article (can't remember from where) discussing how films made for a female audience tend to get lower ratings. So this might be the reason.

So looking at wedding movies: Another popular female wedding movie Bridesmaids has a 6.8 while the popular guy wedding movies like Wedding Crashers and The Hangover has a 7 and 7.8 respectively.

    1. Haha they're definitely fun and with subtitles switched on it's like karaoke.

  6. I enjoyed all 3 films. I love The Wedding Singer because it is sweet and it brings back the 80's which is my decade. Best friend's Wedding is good even if typical. I liked Mamma Mia because I love ABBA but Pierce Brosnan can't sing worth a damm

    1. Yes he was awful! Only Russell Crowe as Javert in Les Misérables (2012) can match him in the bad singing.

  7. I liked Mamma Mia when I first saw it, upon reflection its terrible. Or at least, I find it terrible. The stage show is far better - but they're all professional singers...

My Best Friend's Wedding is perplexing. The two lead males look alike? I have to say, I don't see it. I haven't seen The Wedding Singer - can't stand Sandler either - but I do like Drew Barrymore

    1. MBFW - Haha yeah they look alike to me from certain angles, at least in the movie...and I know I'm not alone.

The Wedding Singer is just adorable. If you like 80's stuff, you'll enjoy it.

  8. LOVE My Best Friend's Wedding! Favorite scene is the absurd "Say A Little Prayer" sing-along - so much fun!

Mamma Mia is only good as camp. Love the songs and the cast but it's terribly done as a film.

The Wedding Singer is one of my favorites - Sandler and Barrymore make a terrific couple!
