Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. Your picks can either be favourites/best, worst, hidden gems, or if you're up to it one of each. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Train Movies (Suggested by John Hitchcock)

---

Hey everyone! This week's theme was suggested by John Hitchcock @ HitchcocksWorld. There has been quite a number of train set movies in recent years but trouble is I don't think I've really love love most of them so I'm going with some older picks.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
I don't know where The Darjeeling Limited would rank in Wes Anderson's filmography, but I certainly like it. Possibly more than his most recent. Best of all it fits today's theme perfectly.

The Lady Vanishes (1938)
A young woman realises an elderly lady she recently became acquainted with has disappeared on the train they are traveling on. She tries to enlist fellow passengers to help find the missing lady but some of the passengers have oddly claim to never have seen such a person. For some reason I thought this movie was made much later, I didn't know it is that old. One of those rare times I like a very old movie. I was reading the IMDB message boards today and it seem people didn't like the first 30 minutes. No...why? I thought it was a good introduction to the characters with some funny bits.
Strangers on a Train (1951)
Yep another Hitchcock film. Can't help it. It's one of my favourites. If you have yet to check this one out, do it now; it's one of those movies that's referenced a lot. While this has much less scenes on a train unlike my other picks today, the train does play a major role in the plot which is very simple really. As per the title: two strangers meet on a train, each has someone in their life they want to be rid off. One of them pitches a scheme to swap murders because without connection and motive prosecution has a weaker case. The other thinks it is all just empty silly talk until one of them does the deed.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  1. Darjeeling Limited would have been on my list but alas I chose it for something else. I recently saw THe Lady Vanishes - brilliant film, loved it and especially the silly English acting so calm during gunfire.

  2. Should like to add - I'm British so the jokes were not lost on me. My mum actually kept saying, 'I think Hitchcock is poking fun at the English'

  4. Pretty sad that I've only seen The Darjeeling Limited. Excellent flick, but I feel like I should have seen the other two by now. Oh well, something to strive for. Great picks!

  5. The Darjeeling Limited has cropped up a few times this week, and now I regret having never seen it! Definitely adding it to my watch list :)

  6. I also choose Darjeeling. I haven't seen the other two though. I should, my Hitchcock viewing are a bit pathetic.

  7. Thanks for including a train week. I've been looking forward to it all year. The Darjeeling Limited narrowly escaped my list and I'm surprised at myself that I didn't mention Hitchocock once.

  8. OK I LOVE Strangers on a Train and must have seen it at least 10 times. Robert Walker deserved an Oscar for this and i think it is one of Hitchcock's best! I also picked The Lady Vanishes and find it one of Hitchcock's early stylish films. I have not seen the newer film but I wanted to when it came out so thanks for reminding me

    1. I don't remember The Lady Vanishes being particularly stylish. I guess what I remember of it was the humour.

  9. Love the Hitchcock picks. Strangers on a Train is such a tense, well made film. Such a shame Walker died right after, so much talent wasted.

The Lady Vanishes is excellent as well though I prefer Strangers, Peter Bogdanovich directed a remake in the 70's which stinks on ice. Speaking of which I hope the proposed redo of SOAT that is being bandied about now falls though. I don't have a problem with remakes if the original had a good premise that could be improved on, Oceans Eleven is a good example, but if its perfect as is let it be, you're riding for a fall.

Haven't seen Darjeeling, I usually can't stand Owen Wilson so I've avoided it.

    1. What title does the 70's Strangers remake go by?

    2. It's a remake of The Lady Vanishes that Bogdanovich did in the 70's and it has the original title, I watched it because of Angela Lansbury playing the Miss Froy role but it's a bad movie and she's not in enough of it to save it.

  10. Still need to see Strangers on a Train! I'm actually not that fond of Darjeeling Unlimited, but it's a good pick in terms of movies set on a train.

  11. Darjeeling Limited! We matched up on that one. I really need to see the other two.

  12. I can understand why people disliked the first thirty minutes, it does sure take its sweet time getting going but it does introduce characters well. I loved Charters and Caldicott, they are soooo British. Embody every stereotype there is. I think we should bring them back.

    1. Can't remember the names but those are the guys who were reluctant to share tables in the beginning right? They're funny. I like the first 30 minutes because of the humour, I guess its what's been called British humour. All of the passengers are just annoyed to be inconvenienced by the train's delay and everyone is just so uncomfortable and awkward with each other.

  13. Hi just found your site and love all the ideas for movie lists. I just start my own blog and added my train movies, which was harder than I thought as I only wanted to do movies I have seen. I did Mission Impossible, Under Seige 2 and Money Train.
