This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Post-Apocalyptic World (Not Apocalyptic)

---

Hey, so if you haven't heard, Netflix just when global last week. Finally it arrived here after years of waiting! So I have been binge watching shows like The 100 which is, as you might know, is set in a post-apocalyptic world, which brings to today's theme; here are my post-apocalyptic movie picks.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
I always get confused which is the first  and which is the sequel. Both "Dawn" and "Rise" sounds like a first-movie sort of title. So this one explores the world after the disease outbreak the devastated the human population while the apes have thrived. Basically it looks like the beginning of the end for the humans.

I Am Legend (2007)
Once again a plague has killed everyone except seemingly one man and he wanders the streets with his dog to find other survivors and work on a cure. So the movie takes a different approach to the "legend" aspect of the story. I prefer the book "legend" which is more depressing.

The Divide (2011)
A handful of people survive a nuclear blast by seeking refuge in a bomb shelter under their apartment. Personality clashes, fights over resources and distrust result in some terrible things happening. Just very bleak and depressing.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  4. I've never seen The Divide. I liked Dawn, but I hated I Am Legend. I liked the comic so much better.

    1. I suppose the I Am Legend comic book follows the book's story?

  5. I find the apes movies terrifying. I saw the first original film and that freaked me out too. I think its the whole 'helpless Human race' thing and we all know what happens

    1. Hmmm, I don't find the Planet of the Apes movies (at least these newer ones) terrifying just really sad. But the apes themselves, yes, I guess I do find them terrifying just because they're so much larger and stronger and now have the mental capacity almost like humans.

  7. I didn't care for I Am Legend and The Divide is new to me but both are good picks. I haven't seen this installment of Planet of the Apes but I chose the original as one of my choices.

    My three:

The Planet of the Apes (1968)-The original story of a crew of astronauts who crash land in a world where a society of intelligent talking apes reign supreme. They are quickly taken prisoner and discover that humans are now subservient. Both cheesy and impressive at the same time with hambone Charlton Heston the exactly right actor in the lead.

The Time Machine (1960)-At the turn of the 20th century H.G. Wells tells a group of friends of his time machine to their disbelief and one’s warning not to tempt the laws of providence. Wells ignores the advice and travels far into the future to find a sobering world populated by recessive humans called Eloi and strange creatures called Morlocks. This won an Oscar for its revolutionary time lapse photography.

The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959)-Miner Ralph Burton (Harry Belafonte) trapped for a number of days in a cave-in, emerges to find himself the seemingly lone survivor of a nuclear holocaust. Traveling to the closest large city, New York, he finds it deserted at first but eventually meets Sarah Crandall (Inger Stevens) who has also managed to survive. They form a close friendship until the appearance of a third survivor (Mel Ferrer) and tensions flair. A three person chamber piece.

    1. I Am Legend was not that bad. I think I just prefer the first half of it. It could have gone more with practical effects and have aged better. Overall I do feel like I Am Legend lacks the punch that the book has. It seems to go for more a hopeful sort of end and therefore lack the depth the book went, which I find that a couple of adaptation choose to go for hopeful ends. Maybe these book ends are just too depressing for the screen and just didn't test out well.

  8. I liked that version of Planet of the Apes-I thought it was well done and better than the first. I am Legend is another good movie although sad to see his dog get bit. I am a sucker for more happy endings. The original film with Charltom Heston is one I still need to see. I haven't seen the last film but it does sound like a downer...well, considering the topic, no kidding:)

    1. Hmm...I think I might just prefer Dawn more than Rise too. It has more of the apes' story and it's like a Shakespearean tragedy isn't it.

  9. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes...one of the few sequels better than the first film (of the rebooted franchise).

Haven't seen I am Legend for years, but would like to revisit it.
