Thursday Movie Picks #80: Airplane Movies

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. Your picks can either be favourites/best, worst, hidden gems, or if you're up to it one of each. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Airplane Movies

Well I hope you're not afraid of flying, because the flying is the least of your problems on these flights.

Red Eye (2005)
Nice little thriller. When I first saw this I had no idea what a "red eye flight" was. Is it an American term or a term only frequent flyers would be familiar with?

Con Air (1997)
Yep it's a prison airplane, which sounds like a really bad idea and in this movie it really was. Nicholas Cage has been doing a lot of bad bad and bad cheesy movies lately but at least this one he was in, way back in 1997, was cheesy fun.

Non-Stop (2014)
This movie feels very similar to Flightplan; both has someone working in the aircraft/airline industry getting used and made to look crazy as part of a sinister plot for money. But I prefer Non-Stop because it's a better mystery and more action packed.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  1. We match up with one...I haven't seen the others.

I have to say...this was a hard week for me, but I'm happy with my choices ;-D

  2. I really enjoyed Red Eye. Very nice little thriller, as you said. I'm not sure if the term "red eye" is American, but I've always known it to reference late-night flights and I'm no frequent flyer. Con Air is 100% cheesy fun. Not a big fan of Non-Stop. It felt like a bunch of implausibilities and missed opportunities all rolled into a not very exciting package.

    1. Haha, yeah I say little because Red Eye feels very compact, its only 80+ mins so it doesn't meander and I think it benefits from it.

  3. I haven't seen Red Eye, but liked Con Air and Non-Stop, I found both to be mindlessly fun.

  4. I loved Red Eye. I also chose it. It's been awhile since I've seen Con Air and I never saw Nonstop.

I didn't realize Red Eye wasn't a hugely known term lol.

  5. Red Eye was much better than I expected it to be. A zippy little B thriller with good acting, especially for the genre. Both Con Air and Non-Stop are ridiculous in the extreme but that kind of goes with the territory with regard to these sort of films.

    1. I didn't have much expectation for Red Eye either, I suppose mostly because I had no idea what it was about.

  7. I have not seen Red-Eye and it sounds like it's a good movie. I have seen Con-Air-It is , well, a Nicholas Cage movie:) I have not seen Non-Stop either and it sounds like a lot of fun too

  8. Aw I liked Con Air - mostly for the ridiculousness of it all and Steve Buscemi. I'm a bit stumped about what 'red-eye' means too.

    1. I like Con Air too, it was mindless popcorn fun and the kind of movie that is fun to watch with friends.
I have since googled 'red eye' and it seems it's a North American term, so I guess if you are not from that part of the world or a frequent flyer, it's not a term you would encounter.
