Thursday Movie Picks #78: Downstairs people

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. Your picks can either be favourites/best, worst, hidden gems, or if you're up to it one of each. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Downstairs people (in reference to Downton Abbey/Upstairs Downstairs - movies about live in domestic workers).

I almost posted this late today. I thought it was still Wednesday. Where does time go?

The Remains of the Day (1993)
This will, I think, be a popular pick today. I feel like I should give this movie another watch. This is supposedly one of, if not, the best Merchant Ivory movies and I found it dull the first time around. I found Gosford Park dull the first time around too and now it's one of my favourites.

Gosford Park (2001)
I love this movie! Smart manor murder mystery that delves into the lives of both the upstairs and downstairs people.

Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)
The movie based on a book by the same name envisions the girl in Girl with a Pearl Earring as a maid in Vermeer's house. I suppose a movie that features an artist has to be beautiful and this one was. Things look like they came out of a still life painting.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  1. EEK! I'm so ready for tomorrow :-D

Love all these picks. I went with one of them (won't say which) and almost went with another. All three are such great films, too!

  2. It IS Wednesday...on this side of the pond, lol. I haven't seen any of these. Making notes to do just that. Great job!

  3. I almost picked Remains of the Day which I do find quite good. I have not seen Gosford Park but want to and Love Girl with the Pearl Earring. How they captured the look of that time period and the use of yellows and blues which Vermeer loved was excellent.

  6. Excellent picks for the theme but so glad to read your reaction to Remains of the Day! I thought I was alone in finding it a turgid bore. I sat down to watch it with so much anticipation too, love all the performers involved and all the other Merchant/Ivory films but it was ponderous.

However I really love Gosford Park and watch it at least once a year if not more. I'm hit and miss with Altman but all the pieces fell into place on this with perfect casting in every role.

I haven't seen Girl with Pearl Earring in a while but I loved it when I saw it in the theatre.

  7. I've only seen Gosford Park, I thought of picking it but I don't remember it so well. I remember liking it, tho. I really want to see Girl with a Pearl Earring because I've heard nothing but good things about it.

  8. I wasn't keen on Girl with the Pearl Earring at first but on further watchings, I really love it! Ah Gosford Park, I'm guessing this will be popular. Love that film.
