This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Kids Movies Adults Would Enjoy (Non-Animated)

---

I don't have kids, but as a fan of movies, I do sometimes watch some kids movies. Now I can't help but think that parents/guardians have probably had to sit through countless awful kids movies that are just too sugary sweet, too heavy handed, too moralistic, too simplistic or full of bad acting among others. So here's to saving parents/guardians from bad kids movies.

The reason why I have the caveat as non-animated is because I have a feeling that without it, we'll see a lot of Pixar movies being picked. We all know Pixar is very good at making movies that cuts across all age groups so I thought it would be a much interesting and less easy theme without Pixar movies.

Flipped
You know how you'll sometimes hear of elderly couples who've been married forever because they're childhood sweethearts? I feel like Flipped is a movie of how they got together. It's a very sweet tale of two kids who live across each other in the early 1960's. For the earlier part of their childhood it was mostly an unrequited love, not even a friendship, until the other slowly starts to notice what's in front of them. The movie is based on a young adult novel which I haven't read but I understand they actually pushed the time setting a few decades backwards; I think it works and I really enjoyed the 60s setting. Don't the kids just dressed smartly for school in those days? Actually in general, I think people just dress better in that period.

Peter Pan
Peter Pan needs no introduction, everyone know this story and this adaptation is brilliant. I just love this movie. It's got action, adventure, magic, comedy, drama and has a lot heart. It makes me feel like a kid again.

The Secret Garden
Fell in love with this movie as a child and I still love it. There is no actual magic in this, but there's an almost magical quality to it with how the children's spirit were all restored through the restoration of the garden. If you have a little girl or still young at heart, don't miss seeing this particular adaptation of The Secret Garden.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  1. I've stated so many times how Peter Pan is my favorite children's story, sans Where the Wild Things Are, and how the Disney movie is my favorite Disney, sans Beauty and the Beast, and yet...I've never seen the 2003 Peter and the Pan!!!

    1. You have to rectify that. It's great and I'm sure kids will love it too.

  2. I almost picked Peter Pan! I thought that version was excellent. It's funny, I also picked The Secret Garden, and my thought process was "Everyone else is going to pick A Little Princess" and of course, the first entry I see has the Secret Garden in it. LOL

    1. I actually don't like A Little Princess. I also think The Secret Garden is the more popular Frances Hodgson Burnett book and adaptation, so my guess is there'll be more The Secret Garden picks.

  3. I've seen all these picks for once! Flipped was a sweet story and this Peter Pan film wasn't too bad.

I used to love The Secret Garden, loved the book and the film. My mum would always tease me saying I was Mary Lennox becuase I was so sullen.

  4. Darn it, I totally forgot this week. I'm not sure what I'd pick anyway. The only option I can think of is Hugo. I can also think of a few kids movies adults definitely would not enjoy.

Anyway, the only one of these I've seen is Peter Pan, and I remember that being an interesting experience for me since I grew up on the Disney version. I recall being very surprised at how different that interpretation was.

    1. I actually don't remember much of the Disney version nor have I read the play and books. But Peter Pan as a character never made an impression on me until I saw this movie.

  9. Obviously I like Secret Garden since I picked it previously, it is a lovely film. Peter Pan is a great choice, I don't think I know anyone who doesn't like it. Haven't heard of Flipped but it sound worth looking into too.

Here's my three of the week:

Pollyanna (1960)-Fresh scrubbed piece of Americana from Disney made a huge star of Hayley Mills as the Glad Girl, a young orphan who comes to live with her severe maiden aunt and sets about fixing everybody’s lives. Bright and sunny for most of its running time with a cast full of terrific actors this veers occasionally towards the saccharine but if you like Mary Poppins you'll probably like this.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)-Candy colored version of Roald Dahl's fantasy of five children who find the golden ticket and get a chance to visit the reclusive Willy Wonka in his wonderland of a candy factory. Far better than the mess Tim Burton made of the book. Gene Wilder is brilliant in the lead.

The Great Muppet Caper (1981)-Kermit, Fozzie and Gonzo are reporters who head to London on the trail of a jewel thief who has stolen a diamond necklace from Dame Diana Rigg and framed her secretary, Miss Piggy for the theft. Cuteness ensues but as with all the Muppet features and shows they intermingle material that is sophisticated enough for adults while still capturing kid’s attention.

    1. I'd like to check out Pollyanna and yeah I didn't like Charlie and Chocolate Factory movie too, but even the story just wasn't appealing to me.

  10. I haven't seen any of these. Flipped is definitely one I want to see, though. Would like to read the book as well. We have several copies floating around the middle school where I teach.
