This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Meet the Parents

---

Ahh it's the holiday season and also the time, at least in movies, where characters introduce their significant others to their parents. Here are my picks of movie where there are characters meeting their partner's parents for the first time, though not all take place during the holidays and the first of which is the one like best.

P.S. If you haven't seen it yet, the 2019 Thursday Movie Picks Schedule (Preliminary) is up. There are nine empty slots, three of which are for the Halloween Edition, so do give your suggestions.

Brooklyn (2015)
Saoirse Ronan's character meets her boyfriend's family for the first time over dinner. And if I'm remembering this correctly, prior to that she tries to prepare for the meeting and meal by practicing eating spaghetti since she had never eaten it before. It's a small part of the movie but it really gave the movie a sense of time and place.

The Proposal (2009)
Sandra Bullock's character follows her assistant back to his hometown for his grandmother's birthday and where they plan to announce their engagement. This was really popular when it came out but I wasn't quite into it. I'm a little curious how I'd find it now

The Family Stone (2005)
Sarah Jessica Parker plays an uptight, conservative businesswoman visiting her boyfriend's family for the Christmas holiday. Not really a fan of this either but it fits the theme.

  2. Yay I've seen all three this week! Brooklyn was the best made of the trio though Saoirse's Eilis pissed me off with her selfish actions. The Proposal was preposterous but if you checked your logic at the door it was pleasant enough. The Family Stone has such a great cast, well outside of SJP who I don't care for, and yet it was so flat and the family rather despicable.

I went with all humor this week and my first also features Diane Keaton.

Lovers and Other Strangers (1970)-As young couple Mike and Susan (Michael Brandon & Bonnie Bedelia) go through their wedding festivities (rehearsal, ceremony and reception) a cauldron of familial lunacy swirls around them as they meet for the first time. VERY 70’s fashions and interior design is offset by a cast that includes Beatrice Arthur, Cloris Leachman, Gig Young, Anne Meara and in her screen debut Diane Keaton.

The In-Laws (1979)-Nebbishy dentist Sheldon Kornpett (Alan Arkin) finds himself with major reservations to his daughter's upcoming marriage after meeting her future father-in-law, Vincent Ricardo (Peter Falk). At first thinking Vince is mobbed up he is no less distressed when Vince reveals that he's actually a CIA agent investigating an international counterfeiting plot, and that he will need Sheldon's help. Next thing he knows Sheldon is off on a crazy adventure.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)-Toula (Nia Vardalos) is a sweet, somewhat frumpy 30ish Greek girl who works in her family’s restaurant and is dominated by her parents. Frustrated by being stuck in place she pulls herself together, goes to work in her aunt’s travel agency and meets school teacher Ian Miller (John Corbett) and they quickly get serious. That’s where the trouble starts since Ian isn’t Greek, no problem for Toula but a huge one for her family especially when they decide to marry. Her boisterous clan basically take over the title event while Toula and Ian try to stand up against the onslaught. Low budget good natured comedy with a sunny outlook made a mint on its release.

    1. I agree, The Family Stone has a great cast, a pity the movie didn't turn out as well.

I haven't seen any of your picks.

  3. Brooklyn is a very sweet film evoking the 1950s and young love. The Proposal is a typical Rom-Com before Ryan became a bad boy. I don’t mind it actually and find the character of the waiter/stripper/minister funny. The last movie is...complicated and you don’t really care for the Parker character at all.
