Thursday Movie Picks #88: Intersecting Stories

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. Your picks can either be favourites/best, worst, hidden gems, or if you're up to it one of each. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Intersecting Stories (e.g Crash)

 ---

Hey so I just realized today that last week's scheduled post for you to enter your links didn't go up because I accidentally scheduled it as this week's date instead. Oops. I hope you still had fun coming up with your picks.

This week Intersecting Stories I'm picking the movies I didn't enjoy.

Babel (2006)
This movie was so dreary. I remember wanting it to just end so that we get to the part where it all connects, which now I can't even remember what exactly connects them all.

Cloud Atlas (2012)
I don't get what it's trying to say. That part of us gets passed down or reincarnated to future descendants? I just feel there's got to be more that link up all the stories right because other than all the effects and makeup it just didn't get very deep. Maybe the book was more effective?

Valentine's Day (2010) / New Year's Eve (2011)
I'm just going to lump these movies together because they're both bad and I feel like they're both trying to do what Love Actually did. Love Actually was earnest, sweet, funny and at the same time can be heartbreaking; this was not. These were more like spot-the-star movies. None of the segments were memorable.

  1. Good call on Cloud Atlas - loved this film. My sister loved the book too much so never saw the film. I also liked Babel, mostly because of the very loose links between the characters. The smallest of things can affect us and all that and we can each live worlds apart but we are connected in some aways.

  2. I haven't seen any of these films because I heard nothing but blechh reviews...and this still holds true.

    1. Haha yes. Most of the reviews of the above were middling to bad.

  3. I have only seen Valentines Day from your picks, and it was quite bad. I still want to see Babel though.

    1. Babel and Cloud Atlas is still worth watching I feel. The other two is just mediocre holiday fluff.

  4. Too bad you didn't enjoy Cloud Atlas. I really enjoyed that one. The best Wachowski film since The Matrix, for me. Also liked Babel. Didn't bother with the other two as I've nothing but hatred spewed in their direction. Glad your back!!!

  5. I don't remember how Babel connected either because that movie was kind of a snore for me. I haven't seen your other picks.

    1. I know right! Beyond everyone being miserable, the connection was probably very thin.

  6. So glad you prefaced your picks with the fact that you didn't like them otherwise I would have struggled to find something neutral to say about them since I didn't like any of these either.

Babel was probably the one I disliked least and I still hated it. NYE and Valentine's Day were such dreary rip-offs, the only part I enjoyed of either was that scene where Hector Elizondo went looking for Shirley MacLaine in the park and they were showing one of Shirley's old movies. The snippet of that movie was far superior to anything else in either of film.

    1. Ok I don't even remember that part. Haha like I said I find the segments just not memorable.

  7. I LOVED Cloud Atlas, and was going to say that it kinda bent the rules a bit... but then remembered that there actually are links between the stories - at least some of them. It's the only one of these that I've seen, and the only that I even MIGHT see one day is Babel.

  8. I loved Babel, but I agree on Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve.

  9. Even in the novel Cloud Atlas, it is hard to understand all the connections. The movie really did a spot-on job with the book, visually, I thought. I was quite moved by Babel, despite the fact that I was already tired of Innaritu's draining narrative techniques by then. I would never even consider watching the other two of your picks. Glad you don't like them.

    1. Cloud Atlas - Oh really? So I guess it wasn't the fault of the movie. I guess it's not that I could not see the connection, it's just that the connections were thin and I think it felt like it needed to be bigger, grander and weightier to have me care for all the individual stories and people in them.

Ahhh...Innaritu's draining narrative...that's the word. Babel had been my first Innaritu film but I had heard that that was his signature.
