October 30 2014- Haunted Buildings

Hey welcome to the last week of the TMP Halloween Edition. I know, I know, how did October past by so quickly? I hope you have had a fun one watching scary movies. This week's theme was suggested by John Hitchcock @ HitchcocksWorld and I have to say, I love a good ghost story. I've already featured Shutter and The Devil's Backbone before, so I won't recycle them, but if you haven't seen them, go do it! Anyway here are some more of my favourites:

The Sixth Sense (1999)
I can't believe I haven't talked about The Sixth Sense on this blog yet! I think a good ghost story is both scary and tragic and this one balances it really well. That scene with the girl vomiting under the covers freaked me out until I understood what was going on and then it was just incredibly sad. The movie had so many moments like that.

Casper (1995)
I grew up watching this movie. We had a laser disc of it and I watched it a lot. Like who wouldn't want to live in an old manor and meet a friendly ghost?

Nang-Nak (1999)
For some reason I forgot all about this title when we had the Asian Horror theme so it's great that it suits this week perfectly. Set in 19th century Thailand, a man is summoned for war and leaves his pregnant wife living alone in an isolated house. After months away, he comes home to his wife and new born baby. All is well until he eventually finds out what had really happen when he was away. The movie is apparently based on a Thai legend and the story is so very tragic and sad; just the way I like ghost stories. Plus this is a period movie. If Anna and the King is the only glimpse of 19th century Thailand you ever saw on screen, try Nang Nak. I think the movie did an excellent job of recreating the period.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  1. I know what you mean about The Sixth Sense, I was freaked out by the same bit and when she appears under the bed and pushes the box forward. I remember everyone was so annoyed if the 'twist' was given away - massive thing at school. Love Casper, Cathy Moriarty is so brilliant in it. Still makes me laugh. Also fun fact, its also the second time that Ricci and Devon Sawa united (first time was Now & Then) even if it was just for a few minutes.

    1. Sixth Sense - ahh yes, I would also be annoyed if the twist was given away.
Casper - yep I knew about the Ricci and Sawa featuring together again. Sawa was really popular in the 90s, he was like in all the Pop and Tiger Beat magazines.

  2. Nang-Nak sounds like something I need to see. I was underwhelmed by The Sixth Sense, but I know I'm pretty much alone on that island. Forgot all about Casper. Never watched the feature, but I used to watch the cartoon all the time as a kid. Great picks.

    1. If your kids are below 12 I think this would be a perfect ghost movie. It's very cute and there's even Halloween scenes in it.

  3. I can't believe I forgot The Sixth Sense! I would've used that here. I also picked Casper, and Nang-Nak sounds really interesting.

    1. Cool. Casper is such a fun watch. Was a theme park ride ever made out of the secret passage in the movie?

  4. I love The Sixth Sense, don't know why it didn't occur to me but it's a great pick. Somehow I've never seen Casper despite watching the cartoon when I was a kid, maybe that's why I usually find updates of classics deeply disappointing. Never heard of Nang Nak.

    1. Casper was a light cartoon show; I don't think there were major plot points the adaptation needed to keep (wasn't most of the cartoon episodes about the 3 ghosts bullying Casper) so I wasn't really concerned about it possibly being disappointing. The movie is just really cute, fun and a right amount of sadness that doesn't put a gloom over the rest. Now I have to say stay away from the other video sequels.

  5. The Sixth Sense is so great. The reveals of all the ghosts in that film are super scary. Well-done all around. I LOVED Casper when it came out. It's so much fun. Between that and The Addams Family Christina Ricci was one of my favorites from a very young age. Nang-nak sounds very good.

    1. Christina Ricci and WInona Ryder, goth girls of the 90s and they've been in the same movie too. I think the ghost that really spooked and grossed me out int the Sixth Sense was the vomiting girl. I really thought she was going to be another Regan from Exorcist. She's not. Her story is as I said just so very sad.

  6. The Sixth Sense is a great movie-such a shame the director kept going downhill. I saw Casper a few years ago and it is sweet and even brushes on bullying. I have never heard of the last film-sounds intriguing

    1. I haven't watch Shyamalan's new movie The Visit yet but I heard it is good. Maybe he is finally turning it around.
