Thursday Movie Picks #156: Summer Vacation

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Summer Vacation

---

Summer isn't really my season...and I've been drawing a blank on summer themed movies so here goes.

Very Good Girls (2013)
One of my more recent watches. It's a pretty unmemorable movie about two girls spending their last summer before going off to college.

Hearts in Atlantis (2001)
I guess the movie one thinks of when you think of summer and Stephen King...is probably Stand By Me, but I'm not as fond of it as most...so I'm going to go with Hearts in Atlantis which I like more. The gist: a boy and his friends befriend a new tenant who has supernatural powers.

The Go-Between (1971)
Ok...I like this one. Set in 1900, a boy spends his summer vacation at a school friend's grand home and becomes a go-between carrying messages for his friend's older sister and her secret lover.

  1. Haven't seen any of your picks. The only one I've heard of is Hearts in Atlantis, but I haven't bothered with it. I'll only say that Stand By Me is everything. EVERYTHING.

    1. I've seen Stand By Me, I think twice...but yeah I just don't love it like everyone else.

  2. I've never heard of the first and not sure exactly why I've avoided Hearts in Atlantis, I think it has to do with the obliqueness of the title-it never seemed to make enough sense for me to investigate it further. However I'm an Anthony Hopkins fan and now that I know I'll have to check it out.

However I LOVE The Go-Between! Julie Christie is my favorite living actress and Alan Bates in my top 10 for actors so I was good from the opening credits but there is much more to the film. A beautifully constructed movie with gorgeous photography, sets and costumes and a wonderful performance from Margaret Leighton as Mrs. Maudesley.

I went with two classic summer teen movies and a more contemporary comedy with gorgeous views of Greece.

My Life in Ruins (2009)-Stranded in Athens teacher Georgia (Nia Vardalos) takes a job as a tour guide which she hates and isn’t very good at hiding it. Every group seems just like the last-a goofy couple, a frat boy, a sullen teen, a feuding couple, divorcĂ©es looking for a mate, and the funny guy who really isn’t. Mostly tourists on summer vacation and mostly Americans they’re historied out by the time she gets them and most just want to shop. Her latest group looks like it will be business as usual but as unexpected events transpire what starts out so badly slowly turns into a life changing pleasure. Genial romantic comedy filled with stunning views of Greece.

Beach Blanket Bingo (1965)-It’s summer vacation so Frankie & Annette along with Bonehead and the whole gang hit the beach and battle Eric Von Zipper and his gearheads to save the kidnapped singing star Sugar Kane (Linda Evans) with the help of mermaid Lorelei (hey it’s a beach party movie go with it). The ultimate AIP summer flick where all the typical elements gelled into the best of the series with the catchiest theme song.

Gidget (1959)-17 year old Frances Lawrence (Sandra Dee) goes to the beach one day on her summer vacation with her girlfriends. While they are sunning she decides to take a swim and promptly gets bumped on the head by surfboarder Moondoggie (James Darren). Intrigued by both the sport and the boy she buys a second hand board with her birthday money and is soon hitting the waves with Moondoggie and his gang of buddies lead by slightly older beach bum The Kahuna (Cliff Robertson) who dub her Gidget (a contraction of Girl and Midget). From then on it’s pretty much sun, fun and hitting the curl until the film takes a darkish turn when Kahuna, who’s been traveling around the world chasing the perfect wave, faces an existential life crisis but that doesn’t stop Gidget and Moondoggie from falling in love. Enormously successful film with a very appealing Sandra Dee followed by several sequels and a short lived TV show that introduced Sally Field to the world.

    1. Very Good Girls - not a must watch.

Hearts in Atlantis - I agree about the title...I don't remember what it's suppose to mean. I think if you like movies about childhood friendships like Bridge to Terabithia, My Girl etc. I think you'll enjoy it.

The Go-Between - I could not stand Julie Christie in Far From the Madding Crowd so was not expecting to like the Go-Between...turns out I like it and like her so much better in this.

  4. I'd like to see the second 2 film picks you chose because they sound really interesting. Love Anthony Hopkins and enjoy paranormal stuff so sounds right up my alley. They 3rd film sounds engrossing and has that late 60's air about it

  5. I've only seen Very Good Girls, which I liked enough. Not a great film, but not a horrible watch either.

    1. I did not, not like it. It was decent, and just not memorable.
