This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Halloween Edition - Creature/Monster Features (NO Aliens/Vampires/Zombies/Werewolves)

Hey it's October and the whole of this month I'm running the Halloween Edition. Take a look at what's in store for the rest of the weeks.

October 6 - Halloween Edition: Witches/Warlock
October 13 - Halloween Edition:  Creature/Monster Features (NO Aliens/Vampires/Zombies/Werewolves) (Example of Creature/Monsters: Cujo)
October 20 - Halloween Edition: Science Fiction Horror
October 27 - Halloween Edition: Epidemic/Pandemic/Outbreak

I hope this week's theme isn't too challenging. I feel we've already had a lot of aliens, vampires, zombies and werewolves; time for other sort of monsters to get picked...giants, dragons, rabid animals, etc....take your pick.

Trick 'r Treat (2007)
I think if you love Halloween, trick or treating, costumes and urban legends you just have to watch this. It has a bunch of interwoven stories all set on one Halloween night. Lots of monsters in this one including the creature with the burlap covered head that's on the poster.

Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
One of my favorite movies. While I do think the real monster in this Ofelia's stepfather, the other worldly creatures are memorably creepy.

Death Note (2006)
There has been talk of an American remake for this for the longest time and it looks like it's finally happening; I think Netflix is doing a movie or TV series. Anyway the monstrous creature in this is Ryuk a god of death of some kind and in this 2006 Japanese adaptation he looks like a metal goth joker - the cgi work isn't really good so am looking forward to see how he'll look in the new adaptation. The gist of the story, Ryuk drops his "Death Note" a notebook, that gives anyone the power to kill by writing the name of that person, which is picked up by a college student. Disappointed by the injustice he sees, the student decides to rid the world of criminals.

  2. Unusual picks for monster movies but Pans Labyrinth is always a good choice

  3. I have not seen trick or Treat-sounds creepy and scary to me. The 3rd one is a really neat premise that i would like to see. LOVE Pan's Labyrinth! It is a truly great film and those characters are scary

  4. The only one of the three I've seen is Pan's Labyrinth. I had wanted to see it in the theatre and missed it and it took me until this year to finally get around to it. While I won't be rushing back to see it again any time soon but was a unique film with those fantastic creatures.

The other two don't look like my kind of films, even though I love Halloween, urban legends etc. I'm just not a horror guy, but they are great for the theme.

Since this isn't really a genre that attracts me and often has films in it that can best be described as junk I decided to go all out and picked movies that were so terrible they're funny in their wretchedness. My bonus is a step above the others but would never be considered art in any way.

Tentacles (1977)-Balderdash about a killer octopus terrorizing a resort town, and not just in the sea but on land!!! Three Oscar winners, Henry Fonda, John Huston & Shelley Winters, and several other respected performers collect a paycheck.

Empire of the Ants (1977)-Shady real estate agent Joan Collins and a bunch of potential suckers for her latest scheme land on an island in the Florida Everglades that thanks to toxic waste has been overtaken by giant mutant killer ants!! Crunch and munch.

Night of the Lepus (1972)-Bizarre cheapie about a genetic experiment gone wrong. Killer rabbits terrorize the countryside!! Hilarity ensues. Poor Janet Leigh from Psycho to this in only a dozen years!

Bonus-Killer Bees (1974)-Young man (Edward Albert) brings his fiancĂ©e (Kate Jackson) home to his family’s vineyard to meet the matriarch of his clan Madame Maria von Bohlen (Gloria Swanson), who has a strange bond with the bee colony that is the backbone of the family business. Worth catching for the cast alone. This is somewhat out of the perimeter since it was a TV Movie of the Week but it’s surely the best movie on the list!

    1. Trick r Treat is more of the Halloween movie of course given its name. It has vampires, werewolves, ghosts, creatures and monstrous people.

However, Death Note is more of a psychological horror thriller about a young person going on a power trip with his recent acquired ability.
