2016 Thursday Movie Picks

Just a quick post to let you know the 2016 list is now up on the Thursday Movie Picks Page.

You may have noticed that there were a few topics last year and this year which were suggestions by Wendell and Hitchcock. I have decided to open up four dates for suggestions. If you're interested, you can submit a maximum of two topics. I'll choose four of the suggestions I've received and the rest may be used for 2017. Please refrain from suggesting horror related topics as the Halloween Edition for 2016 is already filled up. All I ask is that if you do decide to submit a topic please ensure that you will be able to participate for the Thursday it's allocated. Here are the dates available:

March 3 2016
April 7 2016
September 22 2016
November 24 2016

Lastly, if you have any question, please leave a comment here or on the Thursday Movie Picks Page.

  1. I love a good Western or a great Musical so what about something for those 4 missing dates?

    1. We just had Musicals in Jan 2015, so it'd be too soon to do it again. So I'm picking Western. Thanks for your suggestions.

  2. So glad you're doing this again.

It's late here, so maybe I'm just tired but "Post-Apocalyptic World (Not Apocalyptic)" is confusing me. Not apocalyptic, so no zombies or mutants running around?

As for a suggestion, what about movies that have to do with religion? Any religion. Or teenage angst?

    1. Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic tales sometimes overlaps. But I think some distinction can be drawn. I guess we can start with what "apocalypse" is. In short it's some end of the world disaster. It can be anything that is on a global scale: global warming, natural disaster, nuclear disaster, war, pandemic, asteroids striking earth, alien invasion or a zombie outbreak.

An Apocalyptic tale would focus more on the days leading up to the disaster and the days during the disaster. A movie example is probably 2012 and a TV example Fear the Walking Dead.

A Post-Apocalyptic tale explores what happens after the disaster. It can take place days, years, decades after; is usually characterized by a world that does not look like it once was, significant reduction in world population and not much of any human society just straggling band of survivors. I'll give a TV example again: The Walking Dead. It takes place only a few years after the disaster but the world from what we have seen is totally devastated; all the infrastructures are gone. I hope this clears it up, so yeah it can be zombie or mutants but just set in a world after a catastrophic disaster.

I don't do religious themes, so I'm picking Teen Angst. Thanks for your suggestions.

I'll keep the others in mind for 2017 if everyone is still game on Thursday Movie Picks. Thanks for your suggestions.

  4. A bunch of great themes. Some are going to make me put on my thinking cap and really work to come up with titles. That's part of the fun though.
