This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Time Travel

---

I love time travel shows; we've already had a movie one done some time back so now its time for the TV edition and there's quite a number of time travel series still on air so I'm sure this would be a fairly easy week for everyone.

Timeless (2016 - )
The gist is a historian, a scientist and a soldier travel back in time to catch a guy who has stolen a time machine to change history. It isn't awesome awesome, but I thought this was a fun series to watch and I'm glad it eventually got picked up for a second season after the initial canceled announcement.

Travelers (2016 - )
Time travelers from the far future have come to the present to complete various missions in order to change the course of history to ultimately save humanity from some horrible future. One of the fun time traveling things in this is that whenever they complete a mission, they have little idea how it has affected the future from which they came from and if they're nearer or further from their end goal. The way the travelers travel back in time here is also interesting; it's a little like in the movie Source Code. Basically their consciousnesses are sent back in time to occupy the bodies of people who are about to die.

Outlander (2014 - )
Period drama and time travel? Of course I'm in! The gist: World War 2 has just ended and Claire, a nurse, is on holiday with her husband in Scotland. It was supposed to be a chance for them to get to know each other again after years apart during the war, that is until she got swept back in time to 1743 Scotland. I love season one, it was all about Claire getting over the shock of finding herself in a different time and trying to survive 18th century Scotland (like having to marry a guy, despite being already married in the 20th century, because being a single lady with no kin is not so safe), a period and country she knows little about. The second season had the whole thing about trying to restore a Stuart on the throne again, which I didn't really enjoy. I mean sure they went to Paris, wore gorgeous costumes and did the whole trying to change history thing, but I sort of like it when it was just Claire and Jamie trying to live a life where one of them is from a different time. Anyway, I'm soooo looking forward to the third season because of where the second left off.

    1. Yay Outlander...I feel like we've been waiting a long time for season 3.

You check out Travelers, it has a short season and pretty easy to get through.

  2. Haven't watched any of these yet. Maybe my daughter will turn me on to one of them. Right now she's got me watching Making History which, of course, I didn't pick.

    1. It's a fun series...and also the most family friendly out of the three, so a good one to watch with the family.

  5. The only one I've seen a little of is Outlander, and that was only the first half of the season when I had a free preview of Starz.

  6. I've heard of but not seen any of these. The first two sound intriguing, well actually they all do but I couldn't get into the Outlander book series so that's held me off from that one, so I'll have to see if I can track them down.

I went with two series I adored as a kid and one more recent that while I didn't love it as much was enjoyable. I've recently been able to revisit the two from when I was younger, the first held up...the second not so much.

Atlantis (2013-2015)-When marine scientist Jason (Jack Donnelly) is mysteriously transported from present day England to the legendary land of Atlantis via a deep sea accident he discovers a world of legend and myth ruled by King Minos and his scheming Queen, Pasiphae. At first he blunders about but shortly is befriended by Hercules (Mark Addy)-not yet the strong man of legend and Pythagoras a brilliant but poor youth. As time passes Jason encounters monsters and gods as well as the mysterious Oracle (Juliet Stevenson) who has expected Jason’s arrival and holds the secrets to his destiny and the fate of his father who vanished when Jack was young. A little silly and too contemporary at times but a fun show with an excellent cast.

The Time Tunnel (1966)-“Two American scientists are lost in the swirling maze of past and future ages in their first experiments on America’s greatest and most secret project…”The Time Tunnel”! Tony Newman (James Darren) and Doug Phillips (Robert Colbert) now tumble helplessly towards a new fantastic adventure somewhere along the infinite corridors of time!”

So began this short lived series of adventures through time where each week the pair landed to witness another piece of history (the sinking of the Titanic, the signing of the Magna Carta, etc.) overseen by a team scientists and military able to shift them through time periods but unable to return them to the present. Created by master of disaster Irwin Allen.

It’s About Time (1966-1967)-Goofy comedy created by Brady Brunch mastermind Sherwood Schwartz concerning two astronauts traveling faster than the speed of light who end up in prehistoric times that is best described by its theme song sung in rhyme:

“It’s about time, it’s about space,
About two men in the strangest place.
It’s about time, it’s about flight.
Traveling faster than the speed of light.
Here is their tale, of the brave crew.
As through the barrier of time they flew.
    Past the fighting Minute Men.
    Past an armored knight.
    Past a Roman warrior.
    To this ancient site.

    It’s about caves, cavemen too.
About a time when the Earth was new.
Wait’ll they see what is in sight.
Is it good luck or is it good night?
    It’s about two astronauts.
    It’s about their fate.
    It’s about a woman,
    And her prehistoric mate.
    And now, It’s About Time!”

    1. I want to read the Outlander books but they're soo thick, so I'm probably just going to go with the audiobooks. I have no idea how much the TV series differ from the books, but I hope you do check it out...it is such a beautiful looking show.

  7. I watched the pilot episode of Outlander, which I kind of liked but I could tell it functioned more as a kind of prologue as opposed to a typical episode of the show. I haven't watched any more of it because I don't get cable but I may try some... alternate means...

    1. Definitely a prologue...I think they barely showed 18th century Scotland in the first episode. Aren't Starz shows also streaming on Hulu or Amazon over there.

  8. I haven't heard of the others but Outlander is getting a lot of praise from some of my friends! - Mette

    1. I think it's great. There's drama, romance, the whole time travel thing and also has action and adventure...so if you're into any of those I think you'll enjoy Outlander.
