This week's Thursday Movie Picks is New to the City

---

This is coming in rather late so it’s going to be a short one. All these movies have characters that are new to the city. They all have a wide eyed wonder about them and being new mean a lot of first experiences.

Northanger Abbey (2007)
In this Austen adaptation, the main character, a naive young woman, accompanies a family friend’s holiday to the city of Bath where she partakes in balls and experiences a lot of high society things for the first time. This is a sweet charming adaptation and features earlier performances of Felicity Jones and Carey Mulligan.

Enchanted (2007)
A princess from a fairytale world is cast out to our world and dropped into modern day New York City. This movie is super fun and cute. Its sequel has completed filming and is in post production. We’re finally going to get to see it in 2022 after a 15 year wait.

Brooklyn (2015)
A young Irish woman comes to Brooklyn to work so far away from her family. As for first experiences, remember the scenes of her eating spaghetti for the first time and learning that it was easier to wear bathing suits underneath clothes when going to the beach. Anyway, Saoirse Ronan is great in this as always.

  1. I have not seen the first film which sounds good but I enjoyed watching Enchanted which was fun and I love Brooklyn...more than I thought I would.

  2. I love your picks! Northanger Abbey is one of my favorite Austen stories, despite it generally being looked down upon a little bit. Also, JJ Feild is always a joy to watch in my eyes.
Also, really fun interpretation of the theme with Enchanted! Didn't even cross my mind, but it fits so well!
