Thursday Movie Picks #297: Bad Boys

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share your movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Bad Boys

---

This is a fun topic. At first I thought of going the route of school bad boys, then I thought of a theme within a theme within a theme. I'm going for literary bad boys who are all men in uniform serving in the military.

George Osborne from Vanity Fair (2004)
Snobby narcissistic George marries the naive Amelia. I thought he was perfectly played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers who looked like a total peacock especially with the costumes and the vibrant colors this adaptation had.

Mr Wickam from Pride & Prejudice (2005)
The charming, ambitious and opportunistic Mr Wickam tries to woo Elizabeth and when he fails at that quickly moves on to the silly youngest Bennet sister, Lydia.

Sergeant Francis Troy Far from the Madding Crowd (2015)
Bathseba attracts three different suitors and yet chooses to marry the handsome but reckless Francis Troy.

  1. Ugh... Sgt. Troy Far... he's so... bland. Then again, I didn't like the guy who plays him. I forgot his name as he just sucks ass as an actor.

  2. Cool idea to have a theme within a theme within a theme! I haven't seen these movies but have read the novels - all classics.

    1. That's too bad. Out of the 3, I'd recommend the P&P adaptation the most.

  4. Ohhh Vanity Fair. I completely forgot that movie existed. I didn't care for FFTMC but I really loved the 2005 version of P&P.

  5. Interesting way to go with this and I love a multilayered theme within the theme!

I'm not always crazy about Rhys-Myers but he fit his role in Vanity Fair very well.

I care even less for Tom Sturridge and I thought he was terrible in Madding Crowd especially in comparison to Terence Stamp in the original Julie Christie version. Francis Troy is a cold-hearted, selfish bastard at least to Bathsheba and the role requires someone with an icy edge which Stamp brought to the part in spades Sturridge was a vacant spot on the screen.

Mr. Wickham doesn't require the same level of rottenness but still a feeling of opportunism and smarm that Rupert Friend does very well in realizing in the character.

I used the theme's subject as my connection for my trio.

Bad Boy (1935)-Pool shark Eddie Nolan (James Dunn) would like nothing better than to spend his time shaking down suckers and shooting the breeze with the other sharks. But he loves Sally Larkin (Dorothy Wilson) whose parents think him a bad boy wastrel and refuse until he has a reputable job. Eddie tries the straight and narrow but is unable to find a place. Driven to despair he contemplates whether he has anything to live for. Fast paced programmer, under an hour, definitely foreshadows Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

Bad Boy (1949)-Bad boy delinquent Danny (Audie Murphy) has a raft of charges against him but the judge decides to give him one more chance and sends to the reform school Variety Ranch run by caring Marshall & Maud Brown (Lloyd Nolan & Jane Wyatt) to see if he is capable of redemption. With an enormous chip on his shoulder tough nut Danny may prove to be more than even the Browns can handle.

Bad Boys (1983)-Bad boy delinquent Mick O'Brien (Sean Penn) is sent to juvenile hall after accidentally killing rival gang leader, Paco Moreno’s (Esai Morales) young brother when a con he’s running goes wrong. In the brutal prison Mick finds himself instant adversaries with the vicious Viking (Clancy Brown) and Tweety (Robert Lee Rush). While Mick fights for survival inside Paco plans to take revenge on those close to Mick, including his girlfriend J.C. (Ally Sheedy).

    1. I thought Sturridge was ok. I have seen the other adaptation with Stamp as Troy, but I really do not remember much of the male leads performance, only that of Julie Christie which I disliked very much.

And wow are they many movies with Bad Boy as titles.
