This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Halloween Edition - Rituals

---

Hey it's October again and it's time for the Halloween Edition. Take a look at what's in store for the rest of the month.

October 3 - Halloween Edition: Period Drama Horror
October 10 - Halloween Edition: Teen Horror
October 17 - Halloween Edition: Jump Scares that Got You [Suggested by Brittani]
October 24 - Halloween Edition: Rituals
October 31 - Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

I'm simply going with ones that came to mind.

The Wicker Man (1973)
This is great. It starts of like a mystery and just gets creepier and creepier. While it's remake is so laughably bad.

Jennifer's Body (2009)
Can't believe it's been 10 years since I saw this. Anyway I liked this quite a bit, and I am so surprised that it has such a low rating on IMDB...and have always thought that it would eventually be a cult fav one day.

The Ritual (2017)
Easiest pick since it is the title. It was creepy and scary. Though I can't say I truly get it. The movie gives some flashbacks to an incident that caused a death of one guy in a group of college friends, so does the whole eventual ordeal in the forest also serve as some sort of metaphor for survivor's guilt of the remaining friends?

The Babysitter (2017)
A little over the top, but still a good horror comedy I think.

  1. The only one I've seen of yours is the first. I didn't like it as much as you did but it was fascinating in its oddity, and well-acted to boot.

I've heard of the others but was never interested enough to track them down.

The choice of my first which is one of the best films that uses a ritual as its base led me to my second. The third was one I saw on TCM years ago and really admired especially considering its age.

Rosemary’s Baby (1968)-Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow in full pixie mode) and her struggling actor husband Guy (John Cassavetes) move to a New York City apartment building with an ominous reputation and odd neighbors Roman and Minnie Castavet (Sidney Blackmer & Ruth Gordon who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar). When Rosemary discovers she’s pregnant she becomes increasingly isolated, the now successful Guy begins to change in disturbing ways and the diabolical truth is revealed only after Rosemary gives birth. Roman Polanski’s first American film is a classic of sustained dread.

The Eye of the Devil (1966)-French vintner Philippe de Montfaucon (David Niven) returns to Bordeaux with his wife Catherine (Deborah Kerr) when the estate falls on hard times. Upon arrival they are confronted by the beautiful witch Odile de Caray (Sharon Tate in her starring debut), who also lives on the estate with her brother Christian (David Hemmings). As time passes it becomes clear that a ritual sacrifice is expected to return the vineyard to its former glory.

Häxan (1922)-Silent film explores the history of witchcraft, demonology and Satanism. Lacing a narrative of the persecution of a woman accused of witchcraft through its representations of evil in a variety of ancient and medieval artworks and offering vignettes illustrating a number of superstitious practices. The film ends by suggesting that the modern science of psychology offers important insight into the beliefs and practices of the past. Fantastic hybrid of documentary and fiction.

  2. We share The Wicker Man as I also went with the original which is the best one. I can't believe it either it's been so long since I saw Jennifer's Body. I too liked that one. I'm wondering how I'd feel about it today.

  3. We match on The Ritual! It's been a really long time since I've seen Jennifer's Body. I honestly can't remember my opinion on it. I still need to see The Babysitter and the original Wicker Man. I love how terrible the remake is.

    1. Wait you haven't seen the original Wicker Man. You've got to see it. When I saw the remake, I was so shocked. Like what were they trying to do? It wasn't bad like most remakes were...it was laughably so.
