Thursday Movie Picks #264: The Great Outdoors

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share your movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is The Great Outdoors

---

I'm doing a theme within a theme: it's kids experiencing the great outdoors.

The Kings of Summer (2013)
I don't remember much of it now, but I did enjoy this movie about a couple of teens who build a house in the woods and living off the land for the summer.

Standing Up (2013)
In this one, the kids didn't quite have a great experience with the great outdoors. I really enjoyed this one, a rather heartfelt sweet movie about these two kids becoming friends when ran away together from summer camp after a terrible prank.

The Secret Garden (1993)
One of my all time favourite movies, it's about these two kids who have mostly lived a life confined indoors finally venturing outside and resuscitating an almost dead garden. I love love this movie. It's one of those movies that has like a sort of fairytale magical quality to it and that garden was so gorgeous wasn't it? You almost expect woodland creatures to come out talking and singing.

  1. This is an excellent version of The Secret Garden, beautifully directed and well-acted.

I did like Standing Up more than I expected to but Kings of Summer left me cold.

I went with somewhat of a survivalist theme for my three.

A Walk in the Woods (2015)-Travel writer Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) decides to hike the Appalachian Trail and since he is no longer a young man at his wife’s (Emma Thompson) urging he is accompanied by his old friend Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte) who proves to be more of a hindrance than help. Based on Bryson’s best seller.

Alive (1993)-After crashing in the Andes Mountains, the Uruguay's rugby team struggle for survival as their initial hopes of a quick rescue dwindle. As days turn to weeks and their supplies run out they are confronted with grim choices that must be made. Brutal yet compelling and based on an actual event.

Jeremiah Johnson (1972)-After the Mexican-American War ends veteran soldier Jeremiah Johnson (Robert Redford), heads to the mountains to live in isolation. He meets seasoned mountain man (Will Geer) who takes him under his wing and over the years he carves out a life until he incurs the ire of the Crow Indians.

    1. The Secret Garden - Yes...I know right, very gothic mystery. And a little movie trivia, the actress who plays Mary Lennox is also in Standing Up as I think a camp counselor.

  3. I also love The Secret Garden, it was one of my favorites as a kid. I still watch it every now and then. Kings of Summer was a good film too. I never saw the other pick.
