This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Workplace

---

There are a lot of workplace TV shows when you think about. All the cop, legal and medical dramas are all workplace shows and I tried my very best to not pick one of those except for one. I'm picking the ones I like this week.

The Office (2001 - 2003) & The Office (2005 - 2013)
Follows the lives of employees at a paper company. I've seen both the UK version and the US one, although not all since there were so many seasons. I think I stopped up until Jim and Pam got married. Anyway I enjoyed both versions.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013 - )
Follows the lives of detectives at Brooklyn's 99th Precinct. I don't watch a lot of comedies, but this is one of the current one still airing that I love. It's funny, it's sharp and the characters are super geeky about the things they love, it's cute.

Superstore (2015 - )
Follows the lives of employees at a superstore. A new favourite which I only started watching from the second season. It's funny and just very easy to get into even when you haven't started from the beginning.

Boston Public (2000 - 2004)
Follows the lives of faculty members at a high school. It's been soo long since I saw this. Anyway I like that they show a different side to school.

  1. I've seen the first season of The Office, the American version, and I liked it. I should probably watch the others too.

    1. All except Boston Public are comedies so they're very easy to consume and the UK The Office has so few episodes.

  2. I've seen quite a few episodes of the Office but never really in order. I've heard a lot of good things about Brooklyn 99. I did watch an episode of Superstore the other day and it was way different than I expected. It was really funny.

  3. Was never a fan of the UK office but I did love the office US, seasons 2-5 anyway, lost track after that. LOVE Brooklyn nine nine, really need to catch up on that.

    1. You're from the UK right, I would have thought the UK Office would be more up your alley. The humor is different but I like both versions.

  4. I've never heard of Superstore and have only caught a few episodes of The Office and Boston Public.

But I LOVE Brooklyn Nine-Nine!! I've watched since the first show because I like Andy Samberg but the great thing about the show is that he doesn't have to be the STAR of the thing. The cast is so talented and each gets to bring their individual quality to their characters so that they evolve. All are wonderful but if I had to chose a standout it would probably be Joe Lo Truglio as Charles. He makes someone who would be rather frightening in real life funny and endearing. I miss Gina! Probably off touring with the Dancey Reagans.

So many choices for this week's theme. I went with two I loved when they were on and one I remember fondly even though it was extremely short-lived.

Murphy Brown (1988-1998)-After spending some time in rehab for her drinking problem broadcaster and tough broad Murphy Brown (Candice Bergen) returns to work on her news show FYI joining capable but insecure investigative reporter Frank Fontana (Joe Regalbuto), esteemed uptight anchorman Jim Dial (Charles Kimbrough) and perky former beauty queen turned features reporter Corky Sherwood (Faith Ford) and led by high strung producer Miles Silverberg (Grant Shaud) who frequently butts heads with the assertive Murphy. For ten seasons the team tackled topical subjects (including Murphy’s baby becoming a cause celebre when Vice President Dan Quayle condemned her for having a child out of wedlock) and Murphy’s inability to find a decent secretary-over the show’s run she had nearly 100. That is unless Murphy was home dealing with her permanent housepainter-daffy, endearing conceptual artist Eldin Bernecky (Robert Pastorelli). Winner of a massive amount of Emmys, Candice Bergen withdrew her name from contention after receiving her 5th.

Designing Women (1986-1993)-At the small Atlanta interior design firm Sugarbakers the four female partners-sisters, the fiery feminist Julia & shallow much married Suzanne Sugarbaker (Dixie Carter & Delta Burke) plus single mom Mary Jo Shively & naïve country girl Charlene Frazier (Annie Potts & Jean Smart) struggle to make a success of the business while discussing and quarrelling about their lives and the situations that cross their paths to humorous effect. Providing the male prospective is their handyman, ex-con Anthony Bouvier (Meshach Taylor). Brilliantly acted sitcom addressed many sensitive subjects including AIDS, racism, spousal abuse, homophobia and in the award winning episode “They Shoot Fat Women, Don’t They?” the cruelty towards people because one’s surface appearance has changed. Ironically for a show about a workable partnership between four people the show because infamous for its hostile work environment behind the scenes with Delta Burke and the producers clashing so strongly (and publicly) that she eventually left the show. It never recovered the special chemistry of its initial lineup.

Bay City Blues (1983)-Ensemble drama of minor league California baseball team The Bluebirds as they move from town to town. As the rookies, up and comers and one time big name players try and work together to form a winning team they have to deal with outside interference as well as each other. An entertaining “lost” series this extremely short-lived show (8 episodes) was Stephen Bochco’s follow-up to Hill Street Blues and starred many performers who appeared on that show or would on his next, L.A. Law including Dennis Franz, Ken Olin and Michele Greene plus a pre-stardom Sharon Stone.

    1. Brooklyn 99 - Yes such a great cast, so diverse and so funny.
Murphy Brown - I've actually seen it, but I was very young so I probably didn't comprehend much.

  5. I've seen all of these and liked them to varying degrees, but can't say that I'm really into any of them.

  6. I have been meaning to watch Brooklyn Nine Nine but it has still eluded me. I do really like Super Store because it is not only funny but hits on things that people who work in retail deal with. I haven’t seen the others but they sound good

    1. Superstore - Yes with the retail thing. I love the usually funny little non speaking scenes of customers shopping or just staff going about their work.
