Thursday Movie Picks #167: Just Not Funny Comedies

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Just Not Funny Comedies

---

One of those genres where I often go...what...people like this? They found this funny? It could be a cultural/language thing? Comedy is just one of those genres that doesn't translate well.

The Hangover (2009)
Just didn't find it that funny. Maybe it appeals more to guys?

Wedding Crashers (2005)
I've watched it again recently. Still feel pretty much the same way as The Hangover.

Ace Ventura (1994/1995)
Don't know which one I saw (probably both of them?) thought it was one of the worst things I had ever seen. So not a fan of slapstick/physical comedy.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Like I think I get it...like we're suppose to laugh at these ridiculous sexist fools in the seventies and say can't believe these things used to happen...except it still does and I saw this in late October early November of last year, so yeah, could not find it funny.

  1. Anchorman & The Hangover left me cold but I didn't hate them I just didn't think they were anything much. But I detested Wedding Crashers, both stupid and insulting. I've only seen bits of Ace Ventura and that was more than enough.

Regrettably this was easy since there are so many crappy comedies to choose from but these three were especially odious.

All About Steve (2009)-Sandra Bullock, usually so charming and quirky makes a complete fool of herself in this alleged comedy about nothing so much as creepy stalkerism. A total misfire this is surely her worst film.

My Boss’s Daughter (2003)-Young dude (Ashton Kutcher) agrees to housesit for his boss in the hopes of scoring points with both the boss and his daughter. But almost as soon as he takes residence a litany of guests and lowlifes including his boss’s son tramp through the place doing things that any rational person would never do in someone else’s home. SO very stupid and extremely vile. Unfunny in the extreme.

Town & Country (2001)-Warren Beatty directed mishmash that sat on the shelf for years and deservedly sank like a stone on release. Just a terrible mess of a movie that has only the most tenacious plot line running through it. Stories are picked up and dropped willy nilly adding up to pretty much nothing. This notorious flop reportedly cost many, many millions of dollars but they certainly don't show on screen. Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn try to do something with their parts although they are ill-served by the script. Everybody else goes down with the ship, poor Charlton Heston and Marian Seldes are made ridiculous in yet another totally needless subplot. A perfect example of a director and studio lucky enough to gather a great group of talent and then squander them totally.

    1. Don't know your last pick at all. My Boss's Daughter I know of but don't think I've seen. All About Steve, I saw it had a lot of bad reviews so I had stayed away...good thing I suppose.

  2. Am I the only one who thinks Ace Ventura is funny?!

    1. I'm sure you are not. The first movie spawned a sequel rather quick so I'm guessing it did very well box office wise.

  3. I loved The Hangover...stupid? Yes! I really loved it and I like The Wedding Crashers...also stupid but I laughed. Your other 2 I totally agree with and can't stand them

  4. Oh no I actually found all of these movies to be funny! Except the first Ace Ventura, I was never a fan of that. When Nature Calls I loved as a kid though.

    1. Like I said it could be a cultural/language thing. Plus comedies isn't my favourite genre.
