Thursday Movie Picks #158: The Chosen One

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is The Chosen One

---

Ahh...the chosen one...so many to pick.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)
It has such a low rating on IMDB, but I remember liking it, this was of course way before the series was ever made, so there was nothing to compare to...and it had Luke Perry...in the 90s, he was the IT guy because of 90210. I would love to see this again.

Star Wars 1-3 (1999-2005)
I know people hate the prequels, but I like them...anyway they were all about Anakin Skywalker, the one prophesied to bring balance to the Force. For some reason no one seem to realise that as the good guys were winning, "the one" will be a bad guy to balance it all out. Oh and I just love the simplicity of that poster.

The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007) and Seventh Son (2014)
I only found out about the seventh son of a seventh son folklore because of the movies that were made about it and it's an interesting lore, but too bad the movies using that basic premise have all been really bad. The Seeker was trying so hard to be the next YA franchise but it was boring and Seventh Son was just this bad bad medieval fantasy movie.

  1. I actually like Buffy and don't understand lol the hate for it. It's nothing great by any means but it's. Fun flick. Those middle Star Wars movies are not that great and I hated the kid....he couldn't act worth a damm. I did enjoy them regardless and had fun with them. I haven't seen the last ones and probably won't.

  2. Buffy was fluffy goofy fun but once was enough for me and I never watched the series. I'm barely a fan of the original Star Wars trilogy so I never gave any of the prequels a look. I haven't seen either of those last two but from your less than enthusiastic words I'll be giving them the go bye.

I stayed away from franchises since I expect Harry Potter and Star Wars will be all over and sought out stand alone films that looked at the theme.

Excalibur (1981) - Director John Boorman’s amazingly evocative version of Le Morte d’Arthur where all the elements-casting, cinematography, acting, music, visual style and direction blend seamlessly. Following a prologue explaining how Excalibur came to be in the stone we meet the young squire Arthur (Nigel Terry) who is guided by Merlin (a brilliant Nicol Williamson) to the realization that he is The Chosen One by removing the Sword in the Stone. Initially as King Arthur he unites England, befriends Lancelot, takes Guenevere as his Queen and formulates the Knights of the Round Table but then his malicious half-sister Morgana (Helen Mirren) begins to take her revenge for the grudge she’s long held against both Arthur’s father and Merlin and a darkness descends on the land. Loaded with performers who went on to greater fame-Gabriel Bryne, Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart and Mirren among them.

The Ten Commandments (1956)-C.B. DeMille’s final film is a huge pageant telling the story of how Moses came to realize he is The Chosen One to lead the Exodus to Mount Sinai and receive the Ten Commandments. Florid and often arch but loaded with great set design and effects that are still impressive 60 years later. Charlton Heston’s granite stiffness is actually a perfect fit for Moses, MISS Anne Baxter could not be more dramatically entertaining as Nefretiri torn between two men and emoting for all she’s worth over it and they are not alone, everybody more or less projects to the back row. Both Yul Brynner and Yvonne de Carlo are more naturalistic but they’re exceptions. If you enjoy BIG pictures making BIG statements this is one of the best.

The Last Starfighter (1984)-Teenager Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) spends all his free time playing the video game Starfighter at which he’s expert. He doesn’t think much of it when the new guy in his trailer court (Robert Preston) notices how good he is but the next thing he knows Preston has spirited him away to the edge of the galaxy and told him that he is The Chosen One who can save the universe! Turns out the video game was a test and Alex and his compatriot lizard/man Grig (Dan O'Herlihy) are leading the Star League in fighting the evil Kodan forces.

  3. Still haven't seen Buffy. One of these days, I'll give it a shot. Of the Star Wars prequels I don't hate The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones is the one of the worst movies ever made, and Revenge of the Sith is pretty damn good. I purposely skipped those last two.

  4. I don't hate the prequels. Okay, maybe I do hate Attack of the Clones, but Revenge of the Sith is good.

  5. I dislike the prequels - they do not exist for me BUT that poster is awesome.

Saw Buffy recently - found it hilarious but a bit long. I never watched the show though so it might have gone over my head.

You're right that the folklore is better than the movies. My aunty used to like The Dark is Rising book but wasn't keen on the film.

    1. The Dark is Rising books are really popular. Seventh Son is also based on books called Spooks Apprentice, I think, which are also really popular.

  6. Wendell and Sonia, glad you didn't hate the prequels too and I'm with you guys, Attack of the Clones was the worst of the three. It was trying to do the romance thing which was just awful.
