This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Cults/Secret Societies
---
Today's theme is quite similar to the one 2 weeks ago - the difference is that it can't be a school related society.
Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
The movie follows a young woman who has just left a cult and tries to get back to normal society with the help of her sister and brother-in law. I really like this one. It's quite a tense movie and has this sense of dread through out that her past would catch up to her.
Two documentary filmmakers join a cult led by a woman who claims she is from the future. I just found the premise very interesting, but the movie overall was just underwhelming to me. I feel like I probably need a second watch though as I still can't decide if that ending means she is or isn't from the future.
Byzantium (2012)
Mother and daughter vampires are on the run from a secret brotherhood that have been chasing them for 200 years. Love love this movie.

Great minds think alike. I picked sound of my voice too. Didn't really like it though. I was expecting so much more from it
ReplyDeleteMe too. I thought it was interesting but like I said underwhelming. For one I thought Brit Marling was the main character, she wasn't.
DeleteI love all three of your picks. I also chose MMMM and I almost went with Sound of My Voice. Byzantium is a great movie and I wouldn't have thought of it for this group, but it fits so well.
ReplyDeleteByzantium, yeah, it's quite easy to miss.
DeleteI loved this week's theme! Sound of my Voice was one of my picks too!
ReplyDeleteI have yet to watch all these movies, but they all sound interesting!
ReplyDeleteThese films really sounds great to watch. I am especially intrigued by Byzantium
ReplyDeleteI've only seen MMMM. What a phenomenal film, that is. It has stuck with me even though it's now been several years since I last watched it.
ReplyDeleteIt is, so good.
DeleteHaven't even heard of the last one, must check that one out!
ReplyDeleteGreat picks, I've seen both MMMM and Sound of my Voice - The latter I considered including but went for MMMM instead.
ReplyDeleteMMM is a solid choice. Very underrated too.
ReplyDeleteHmm...I dunno if it was underrated. I feel like I remember seeing a lot of praise when it was released. I think it's more that it's under watched.
DeleteNever heard of any of these (yeah, probably I live under a rock), but they all sound very interesting.
