Thursday Movie Picks #113: College Movies

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. Your picks can either be favourites/best, worst, hidden gems, or if you're up to it one of each. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is College Movies

I'm finding it challenging to find college flicks that I love so I'm going for some bad apples today.

Legally Blonde (2001)
I never got why this one is just so well loved. I mean now I sort of get that part of the appeal is the nostalgia for early 2000s, but I still just mostly see it as just a so-so chick flick comedy.

The House Bunny (2008)
Another one where I don't get why people like it.

Damsels in Distress (2011)
Went into this expecting a quirky, dark comedy-ish college flick and was totally disappointed. It was just a dull dull move with a script that was just awfully awkward and characters that was way too cartoony.

  1. I'm one of those who love Legally Blonde. I think the key to why it's so beloved it that Reese Witherspoon buys into Elle so much and makes her so appealing. She is who she is and despite people judging her on her outward appearance and manner she's secure within herself and that makes the audience root for her.

I heard of both of your other picks but have yet to see them.

  2. I love Legally Blonde, but I was a young teen when it came out so of course I did. I didn't care for House Bunny either and I've never seen the last pick. I assume Greta Gerwig continues to play herself in it.

    1. I think this is the first and only Greta Gerwig featured film I've seen, so I really don't know how her style of acting is.

  3. I'm with you on Legally Blonde just being rather meh. House Bunny is just plain bad. Haven't heard of the last one.

  4. Surprised to see Damsels (I picked it too). I hate Legally Blonde with a passion, it was all anyone wanted to watch at school at the end of term. I hated it. I actually quite liked The House Bunny, I know its dumb and predictable but I liked the cast, Kat Dennings and Emma Stone (before she was everywhere).

    1. Oh yeah...I had seen Kat Dennings in other movies before but this was probably the first one I saw with Emma Stone.

  5. I don't mind Legally Blonde even though I want to smack her. It's a "I'm so sick ill just watch this while I fall asleep" kind of flick. I haven't seen the other films though

    1. Haha yeah...definitely one of those background movies.

  6. I've only watched The House Bunny because of Emma Stone and frankly I can't believe people actually like it.

    1. Yeah I know right! I thought that people would be more offended than actually like it. I mean part of the movie had the girls transforming themselves to be more attractive. It's not that getting a makeover is bad, but making them a Playboy-playmate style makeover totally is bad taste.

  7. I thought Legally Blonde was great. A lot better than it should be and pretty damn smart, considering how ditzy the main character is. The House Bunny is stupid, but I laughed...so what does that say about me?
