Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. Your picks can either be favourites/best, worst, hidden gems, or if you're up to it one of each. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Affairs
 ---

So they're bad but they make really good drama; here are my three picks.

The End of the Affair (1999)
It's been a long time since I've seen this. Taking place during and after World War 2, it's a very moody, broody and quite dialogue heavy which is just the type of movie I like. Ralph Fiennes plays a novelist who had an affair during the war. When his lover ended their affair abruptly, without giving a reason why, he becomes bitter and jealous and rants about I guess everything.

In the Mood for Love (2000)
Two neighbors bond when they find out their spouses may be having an affair. The movie is just gorgeous: the music, the costumes, cinematography...everything. By the end, you'd want the two leads to get together but of course they won't because they just won't stoop to the level of their spouses.

Match Point (2005)
I think this might have been the first Woody Allen movie I saw; I had always thought he only did dramas and comedies so I was a surprised by this thriller. An ex tennis pro marries into a rich family and soon finds that his affair with his brother-in-law's ex-girlfriend threatens his new comfortable life. What will he do?

  1. I enjoyed Emd of the Affair. It is quite wordy but there is so much more to this film. I haven't seen the other 2 but they both sound quite good especially the second film.

  2. I've only seen Match Point which I didn't care for. I've been able to get into most Woody Allen films. The End of the Affair sounds like something I'd enjoy though.

  3. I've only seen Match Point and I really liked it. Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors is kind of similar to it.

    1. I haven't seen that one. Most of his films that I've seen are the ones made after 2000s.

  4. In the Mood for Love is one of my All-Time Top Five. So freaking gorgeous on every level. Love Match Point, too, and really like The End of the Affair.

  5. Sadly, I haven't seen any of these. Been meaning to watch Match Point for years, just never got around to it. Need to fix this.

    1. Yes. It's very different in tone than a lot of his films. Definitely no babbling nerd in this one.

  6. I haven't seen In the Mood for Love, though it's on my list, but I really liked Match Point. One of Woody's best.

I wanted to like The End of the Affair but though the acting was good I hated it. I think it's more the fault of the story construction since I hated the 50's original with Deborah Kerr and Van Johnson too.

    1. I think you'll like In the Mood for Love. There's something very classic about it.

I agree with Match Point. I haven't watch a lot of his older movies, but comparing his post 2000 movies, I think it's definitely top 3 for me.

  7. I've heard so much about In The Mood For Love that I really must see it. I haven't seen the others. I remember when Match point came out, didn't hear many good things about it though.

    1. Really? I thought I heard pretty good stuff about it. Rotten Tomatoes still has the 2005-2006 ratings from the top critics and they were mostly fresh. I think that was why I saw it even though I hadn't seen a Woody Allen movie before.
