This week's Thursday Movie Picks is  Heist Movies

 ---

We had a Bank Robbery theme last year so I'm going to exclude bank heists today. I feel like I've seen quite a number of non-bank heist movies but I just can remember them at all or don't remember enough of their plot to consider some them. Still I found three that I enjoyed.

Trance (2013)
A fine arts auctioneer is mixed up with some shady characters and when he loses a painting they're trying to rob, he has to recover his memories through hypnosis. I like this one. Unreliable narrator and hypnosis made this quite a twisty mystery movie as we try to figure out what is real and what isn't.

Plunkett & Macleane (1999)
Johnny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle play 18th century men who robbed the rich. They go about in such a charming manner they became known as the Gentlemen Highwaymen. Love this one, very funny and just a fun action comedy.

The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)
Another art heist. Of the three this is my most recent watch.  Now I'm curious about the original which has slightly better rating on IMDB.

  1. The 2nd one sounds like a lot of fun and I have this now marked down. I saw only bits and pieces the 3rd film which looked pretty good but would also like to see the original. I have not heard of the first one although it also sounds quite intriguing

  2. The only one I've seen is Trance and I love that you went there. That's a very inspired choice.

  3. I think I went into Plunkett & Macleane with my expectations too high, it was alright but from the description I read I expected a jaunty romp and it fell short of that.

I LOVE the original Thomas Crown Affair and this one was not bad but while I like her a good deal Rene Russo is no 60's era Faye Dunaway and even worse Pierce Brosnan is in no way close to Steve McQueen so this one suffers in comparison but both are good choices.

Haven't seen Trance but it sounds entertaining, alread queued it up.

    1. I guess I was the opposite. I knew nothing about Plunkett & Macleane so I had no expectation. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

    1. It is. I think if you like English caper films like stuff from Guy Ritchie, I think you'll enjoy this.

  5. Haven't seen any of these, but I've been meaning to see The Thomas Crown Affair for years. I've also been meaning to see Trance. Great job.

  6. You can't go wrong with either version of Thomas Crown Affair. The Brosnan/Russo one is sexier, but shockingly not by much. It's a really good remake. Trance has been on my list for a while - it looks so ridiculous, which is how I prefer my heist flicks!

    1. TCF - yes very sexy.
Trance was a mind fuck sort of movie, it does get a little ridiculous but if you enjoy that, I think you'll like it.

  7. Excellent call on Trance - love that film. You've also reminded me of Plunkett and Macleane - taped it once off the TV (VHS would you believe! So long ago) and watched half of it then someone taped over it - never found out what happened hahaha!

  9. These movies sound good. When I saw this topic, the first movie that came to mind was A Fish Called Wanda. :-)
