Thursday Movie Picks #28: Movies with Colour in the Title

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple simple: Each week there is a topic for you to create a list of three movies. Your picks can either be favourites/best, worst, hidden gems, or if you're up to it one of each. For further details visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Movies with Colour in the Title

---

The last few weeks I've been going into how I came up with the particular theme of that week but this week there is no story to it so let's get straight on to my picks. Today all of them are gems with only one which I'd really call hidden gem:

When Jasmine's husband dies after being uncovered as a fraudster, Jasmine privileged life crumbles and her sanity disintegrates. Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for this so yes she was brilliant as Jasmine. Jasmine is definitely not a likable character but it is quite heartbreaking when her efforts to be independent gets crushed and especially when we finally see her completely lose it becoming one of the people you'd sometime see having conversations with themselves.

This would be the hidden gem of the week. In Green Street Hooligans Elijah Wood plays an American who comes to England to visit his sister and soon finds himself a part of die hard football fans who have a penchant for violence. I used to watch quite a bit of English football and no doubt one would hear something of the hooliganism that plagues it. I'm sure this movie probably only scratches the surface of the hooligan culture, still I found it to be a fascinating watch.

Ruby Sparks (2012)
A novelist writes about his dream girl and somehow wills her into existence. Basically it's about loving the idea of a person instead of the person and thinking about this movie reminds me of Amy Dunne's of Gone Girl Cool Girl speech...except I suppose the geek version of the cool girl is the manic pixie dream girl.

So that's it...my three picks. What three movies made your list today?

  1. Good call on Ruby Sparks! I loved that movie. I didn't care for Blue Jasmine (but I don't like Woody Allen movies, so that's why.) and I know I saw Green Street Hooligans, but I don't remember anything about it.

  2. Blue Jasmine is one of Woody's better recent films in large part thanks to Cate's performance but the rest of the cast is strong as well. Haven't seen the other two but Ruby Sparks sounds appealing. Green Street doesn't sound like something I'd usually watch but I like Elijah Wood so maybe.

    My three:

The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956)-A pleasant little fable, a sort of David versus Goliath reworking, of a single stockholder and the corrupt corporate board that tries to keep her from being a thorn in their side. Judy Holliday is totally captivating in a role tailor made to her special gifts, a sweet radiance, a natural if naive intelligence with just a bit of brass thrown in the mix. Paul Douglas and his gruff charm play well off of her and they are surrounded by a great cast of some of the best character actors working in film at the time. Dated in some respects but a real charmer.

Blue Skies (1946)-Vividly bright musical that co-stars Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby has an innocuous story but great singing and dancing. The Putting on the Ritz number in particular is fantastic and the film includes a performance of White Christmas. A huge hit in its day this was supposed to mark Fred's retirement from the screen and it did until Gene Kelly broke his ankle two years later and Fred stepped into the lead of Easter Parade and worked for another 33 years!

Yellow Sky (1948)-Compact William Wellman western with an great cast (Richard Widmark, Gregory Peck, Anne Baxter and Henry Morgan). On the run from a recent bank robbery a gang of outlaws lose their way in the desert and stumble across a ghost town with only two inhabitants, a prospector and his granddaughter. When it appears that the miner has found some gold dissension breeds quickly amongst the gang especially when Peck falls for Baxter.

Honorable mention: The Deep Blue Sea (2011)-A doomed love affair told in flashback. The film is heavy going and deliberately paced but well directed and expertly acted by all. Rachel Weisz is absolutely brilliant as Hester. She won many accolades for this but not the Oscar nomination she deserved, she was excellent in The Constant Gardner which she won for-she's better here.

    1. You went with some older titles there, none that I've seen nor heard. Actually I don't think I've heard about The Deep Blue Sea either but now I'm intrigued.

  3. Ohh Ruby Sparks! Missed that one. I haven't seen Green Street Hooligans. Cate Blanchett stole Blue Jasmine; she was fantastic. Ruby Sparks was also great, though it reminded me of Stranger Than Fiction, as they had similar concepts.

    1. I've seen Stranger than Fiction, quite a long time ago...I can't remember what the story was doing for.

  4. Blue Valentine is amazing. I love that movie. For some I just never got around to Green Street Hooligans. Several times I was close to watching it, but chose something else instead. I've heard of Ruby Sparks, but it was never really on my radar.

  5. Wooops! I meant Blue Jasmine. Cate Blanchett is flat out amazing. I do love Blue Valentine, too, btw.

    1. Unfortunately I haven't seen Blue Valentine, but have heard great things about it.

  6. I've only seen Blue Jasmine from your lineup. I was confused with this weeks theme if you want 'a color' or the word 'color'...so I went with the word.

    Eek. Hope it still counts.

    1. It's ok...now I am curious what made your list. I can only think three movies with the word Colour in them and none of them I've seen.
If you're ever unclear about the themes you can comment on the series main page. I usually reply within a day or two...definitely before Thursday.

  7. I need to see Blue Jasmine again. I know Cate is brilliant, but I caught pieces of it on TV recently and thought it was actually better than I remembered. Ruby Sparks is very cute. I've heard Green Street mentioned a number of times. On the list it goes!

  8. Hi there! I saw your site through Fisti! Great blog. This is a wonderful idea for a blogathon. I wish I would have seen it sooner. I finally saw 'Blue Jasmine,' which I loved. The other two films look interesting. I would like to see 'Ruby Sparks.' I think I've heard of this film before, but somehow it dropped out of my radar. So this is a good reminder.

  9. Ruby Sparks is a great little movie. Definitely an interesting take on the sort of "Manic Pixie Dream Girl." And I've always really like Paul Dano. Blue Jasmine made my list as well this week.

  10. WAIT. I can't have been the only person who even just thought of doing the Three Colors trilogy for this... right?!?
