This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Crime

---

Here are my picks and glad to say I don't think I've ever picked any of them in the past.

Wanted (2016 - )
While waiting at a bus stop two strangers become witnesses to a fatal shooting and it turns worse for them when they become the prime suspect. I've really enjoyed this Australian series that's already in its third season. It's a female buddy action thriller series that very fast paced and has a little bit of humor as well.

Retribution aka One of Us (2016)
The murder of newlyweds rocks the lives of their families who are neighbours causing their secrets to surface. I like it but it was very very gloomy and grim mini series.

The Sinner (2017 - )
In season one, a woman fatally stabs a man while at the beach with her family, without knowing why. This is an anthology series where each season a new crime is investigated. There's been two seasons so far and looks like there's gonna be a third. An interesting series, it's a slow burner that tells its mysteries in such a haunting and eerie manner. I've seen both seasons and I much prefer the first season, I think it had a better story.

Thursday Movie Picks #262: Blockbuster Flops

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share your movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Blockbuster Flops

---

It's summer and so it's the time for blockbusters. Not all of them end up successful so here's to them. My picks today are my latest watches.

Ghostbusters (2016)
Released in the summer of 2016, this new Ghostbusters wasn't able to win over audiences like the original. Though was the original Ghostbusters popular when it was released or was it only years after? I don't know. I actually don't remember much of the plot of the original Ghostbusters too...I haven't seen it in ages. Was it very childish? Because that was what I thought of the new Ghostbusters. That it was made for young audiences. Then there was the slime thing. Was that a thing in the original? Perhaps it was...and perhaps it worked then. But when I saw it in the new movie all it reminds me off is the Nickelodeon slime.

Baywatch (2017)
A 2017 release, but released slightly before summer. I actually used to watch the Baywatch TV series as a kid though I can't remember much now. Just that there were lifeguards running and saving people. I totally didn't remember the whole thing about the lifeguards acting like they're police officers and trying to investigate crimes that occur on their beach, which this movie tries to both replicate and make fun off though quite unsuccessfully. I know it's suppose to be funny like look at how silly everything is, but the humor just doesn't land and so it just ends up being very silly.

The Mummy (2017)
Released in the summer of 2017, this was supposed to be the first movie in the new Universal's monster series of movies, that I think includes Frankenstein, Dracula, etc...Some big actors had also been cast as the leads in the future followup movies and I vaguely remember they had all posed for some movie magazine (Vanity Fair?) piece. Well now that The Mummy flopped...it seems the other movies are no gos, at least I haven't read anything about them still being in the works. Anyway since I've finally seen The Mummy now, I can see why it wasn't popular. It's quite boring. The action wasn't very fun and neither was it scary for a monster movie.

Thursday Movie Picks #261: Muses

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Muses

---

This was another tough theme and I have a feeling there's a very obvious movie that I am forgetting.

Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)
A fictional take on the creation of Vermeer's painting. Love this one. The movie looks beautiful, the set design and the lighting makes everything look like they came right out off the paintings. Then there's also the music which was great.

Renoir (2012)
Set in the French Riviera, a young woman arrives at the home of the elderly Renoir and becomes his new muse just as his son returns home injured from World War I. Now this movie is less about the creation of any particular paintings, though there are lots of painting scenes, but more on the family drama. It's an interesting movie and another one that often looked like it jumped off the paintings.

The Invisible Woman (2013)
The film is about the secret affair that Charles Dickens had with a much younger actress, the so titled invisible woman who is said to have inspired many of his female characters . I remember very little of the movie. I know I didn't like it as mush as the above two and I think I might have found it slow as well.

Thursday Movie Picks #260: Parenthood

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Parenthood

---

This was quite a tough theme. We had a somewhat familiar theme back in 2015, but that focused more on the relationship between the parent and child characters. While I suppose this parenthood theme is more about raising children and the challenges and choices parents make to do so. Anyway here are my picks:

Captain Fantastic (2016)
After his wife's death, a father who has been raising and homeschooling his kids off the grid is forced to reenter the world and rethink the way he has been raising his kids. It was sweet, funny and even little sad at times; overall a pretty good watch.

This Is 40 (2012)
Follows a couple who are about to turn 40, as they raise their kids and manage their businesses. I really enjoyed this, I thought it was funny. Quite surprise it has only a 6.2 on IMDB.

The Incredibles (2004)
Follows the lives of ex superheores now trying to live the quiet suburban life with their kids until a villain emerges forcing them back into action.  I love this movie. It is so sweet and funny. Pixar does the whole human drama thing very well (even when the characters are non humans in other movies) and it's evident here as well with how the parents try to raise their extraordinary children.
