This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Alien Movies

---

I haven't watch any Alien movies lately, so am looking forward to checking some new-ish recommendations this week. My picks today are the ones I watched post 2000s

Paul (2011)
Two geeks help an alien, Paul, to get home. Truthfully I don't remember much of this movie other than it was funny and fun. It's not part of the Cornetto Trilogy but it feels very much like it. Maybe not as good as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, more on par with The World's End.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Inexperienced officer gets thrown into the front lines of war against aliens and has to relieve the same day every time he dies. Great action movie and has a hero that's endearing because he fails so many times, but keeps on trying.

Honeymoon (2014)
This is perhaps my most recent Alien-ish watch. Newly weds go on honeymoon at a secluded cabin. Something weird happens to the wife one night, she starts acting out of character and her husband struggles to figure out what exactly happened to her. Very creepy; the whole isolated cabin thing and that they're newly weds who perhaps may not really have known each other that well certainly adds to the eeriness.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Non - English Language Movies - Spanish (Suggested by Wendell)

---

This week's theme is a suggestion from Wendell@DellonMovies. I haven't seen any Spanish language films lately so I'm going to pick some of my old favourites.

Volver (2006)
Colourful, lively and funny, I really enjoyed this female-centric drama

Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
If you love dark fairy tales and stories where the lines between what's real and what's fantasy is blurred, then you'll love this. Question if you have seen this: did you think the fantasy world is real or did Ofelia made it up as an escape?

The Devil's Backbone (2001)
Picking this once again. If you love Pan's Labyrinth and ghost stories like The Orphanage you've got to see this; it's even set in an orphanage.

Thursday Movie Picks #95: Androids/Cyborgs

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Androids/Cyborgs
 ---

I'm picking Androids because there doesn't seem to be a lot of cyborgs on film, at least good films.

Ex Machina (2015)
A programmer is invited by his wealthy employer to his very private and secluded estate to administer a test on his highly intelligent android. Ahh...finally saw this. Very atmospheric and eerie and just all round great.

Blade Runner (1982)
A cop is assigned to hunt down a couple of androids that have returned to earth to meet their maker. Not sure which version (Original? Director's Cut?) I saw, but I really enjoyed it and am curious about the other one. And hey only 3 more years till 2019.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
An android boy yearns to be human and loved by his adoptive human mother. So sad.

Thursday Movie Picks #94: Affairs

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Affairs
 ---

So they're bad but they make really good drama; here are my three picks.

The End of the Affair (1999)
It's been a long time since I've seen this. Taking place during and after World War 2, it's a very moody, broody and quite dialogue heavy which is just the type of movie I like. Ralph Fiennes plays a novelist who had an affair during the war. When his lover ended their affair abruptly, without giving a reason why, he becomes bitter and jealous and rants about I guess everything.

In the Mood for Love (2000)
Two neighbors bond when they find out their spouses may be having an affair. The movie is just gorgeous: the music, the costumes, cinematography...everything. By the end, you'd want the two leads to get together but of course they won't because they just won't stoop to the level of their spouses.

Match Point (2005)
I think this might have been the first Woody Allen movie I saw; I had always thought he only did dramas and comedies so I was a surprised by this thriller. An ex tennis pro marries into a rich family and soon finds that his affair with his brother-in-law's ex-girlfriend threatens his new comfortable life. What will he do?

Thursday Movie Picks #93: Astronauts

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Astronauts

 ---

Turns out I haven't seen a lot of astronaut movies including last year's The Martian and the other big ones from recent years that I have seen: Gravity and Interstellar I couldn't really stand them. Still I managed I to find 3 that I actually enjoy.

Moon (2009)
The premise of this one is just so interesting. Without spoiling anything it follows an astronaut doing a lone stint on the moon. After getting into an accident, he realizes he isn't alone. If you haven't seen this, I recommend it.

Sunshine (2007)
A bunch of astronauts are on a mission to reignite the dying sun. Several things go wrong but when they encounter a space ship from a previously failed mission you just know things will get worst and it's just scarry. The score for this one stood out too.

Armageddon (1998)
I haven't seen this one for soo long. I wonder how I'd find it now. Even then I found it cheesy; remember how all the newly recruited misfit astronauts were introduced in a spectacular fashion. Cheesy but fun.

Thursday Movie Picks #92: Fish Out of Water Movies

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Fish Out of Water Movies

 ---

This week's theme is surprisingly easy for me. I've picked all of these titles for other weeks before, but they are all such a good fit for today and they are such fun movies too.

Mean Girls (2004)
Cady has never been to school, had not been socialized with kids her own age much and doesn't seem to be in touch with pop culture so she is totally a fish out of water in high school.

Enchanted (2007)
A princess from an animated fairy tale world is banished to New York by an evil queen. What does she know of the real world where woodland creatures don't help you do your chores?

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
A street kid is recruited to join a training program where he will compete for a spot in an elite spy organization against other trainees most of whom are rich upper class brats.

Thursday Movie Picks #91: So-Bad-It's-Good

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share three movie picks each Thursday. This week's Thursday Movie Picks is  So-Bad-It's-Good (Suggested by Daniel)

 ---

This week's topic is suggested by Daniel at Dancin' Dan On Film.
I'd like to think that that movies I like are actually good so this was a tough list to come up with.

Batman & Robin (1997)
I've never been a fan of Batman but for some reason as kid I loved Batman & Robin, which is now probably the worst rated Batman movie on IMDB. I suppose I liked it then because it had two young characters, Robin and Batgirl and as a kid that appealed to me. Now I look upon it with nostalgia; yes it's bad, it's cheesy but still fun unlike the oh-so-serious Dark Knight trilogy.

Twilight (2008)
I actually do like the Twilight movie, the first one at least, still. It's not great of course, there were a few things I think it did well, but the bad bits made it a fun watch: like the cheesy lines, the horrible wigs, the general awkwardness and the constipated look Edward had in the science lab scene were fun to make fun of. Then there were the Kristen Stewart's quirks, I think it was her tucking her hair and biting her lip, which would make fun drinking games.

Con Air (1997)
I had picked this once recently before. Everything that happens in this is pretty much dumb but also cheesy fun. This one fits right it today. I mean just look at Cage's stance in the poster.
