I'm picking favourites.

Love Me If You Dare (2003)
Two childhood friends continue their game of dare into adulthood making them second guess their feelings for each other at every turn. It's quirky with a visual style like Amelie but has a much less sweet story. 

Before Sunset (2004)

Picked this countless of times before for other themes; it's my favourite of the Before series. It's two people just talking at its best.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) 
I suppose this could be a sort of anti-valentine movie since it is about two people who have broken up trying to erase each other from their memories.

Becoming Jane (2007)
The movie imagines Tom Lefroy as Jane Austen's once great love (he may not have been) and I enjoyed it. The leads had great chemistry and there were lots of wonderful banter and passionate dialogue much like an Austen novel.

Jane Eyre (2011)
I think I had picked this for a theme very recently, but whatever, Jane Eyre is what comes to mind immediately when I think of Romance movies. This one is such a beautifully done adaptation too.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Story Within a Story

A story within a story seems like something that could make an interesting movie. While I think I may have seen one that I like, but the title escapes me now, so my picks are those that I am not really a fan of.

Third Person (2013)
This has three interlocking stories. One of them has a writer at the center, so you can already see where the story within a story comes from. Ambitious but ultimately uninteresting.

The Words (2012)
Once again it's a movie that has writer characters. Less ambitious but the link between the stories are clearer so I think it makes for a more coherent storytelling.

The Princess Bride (1987)

A grandfather reads a story to his grandson. This is one of those movies that I want to re-watch as I just didn't see why everyone just love this movie.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Book to TV Adaptations

I love these TV Editions, but I don't know about you, for me they can be quite a challenge to come up with picks as I don't really keep a list of TV shows I've watched like I do with movies. Anyway today I'm picking recent TV shows that I've seen that I like that were also based on a book.

13 Reasons Why (2017 - ) 
Based on a YA book it follows Clay as he uncovers why his crush, Hannah, committed suicide by listening to a box of cassette tapes she left, a sort of lengthy suicide note, her 13 reasons why she did it. It actually took me a long while to get to this series because first the controversy/buzz or whatever surrounding this was just so tiring. Second, while it has been some time since I read it, I do remember not liking the book at all. The series is better I think in that at least we get various other perspectives other than just Hannah. The negative on the TV series is that they stretched the whole thing into 13 episodes of Clay (if I'm not mistaken in the book he only listened to all the tapes in like a day or two) running around for what seems like days and weeks asking his classmates to talk to him instead of just listening to the damn tapes...which was so nonsensical. Now this series is getting a second season which I was like what? But it has diverged quite a bit from the book, so it could be interesting to see what they do with the other characters.

Alias Grace (2017)
Based on a Margaret Atwood novel that is based on a real woman, it follows a young woman, Grace, in 19th Century Canada serving a life sentence for murdering her employer and his housekeeper and the psychiatrist who has to evaluate if she is mentally ill so that a case can be made for pardon due to insanity. This series is just so well made and well told. Grace the main character tells an enchanting haunting tale of her life and the events leading up to the crime. Whether the story she tells is the truth, something she thinks is the truth or something she believes people want to be the truth, we'll never know because in reality, I don't think anyone ever did know.

Anne with an E (2017 - ) 
Based on Anne of Green Gables about a young orphan girl adopted by two elderly siblings who live on Prince Edward Island. I have to say, I hate the title, why can't they just stick with Anne of Green Gables? Anyway I love the 1980s TV series, so I had been looking forward to this and I'm glad to say I love this one too. Now I've not read the book, but I've heard that Anne with an E is much darker than the book, but since I've seen the 80's series, I can definitely say this new one is soo much darker than that. A lot of the times it doesn't even seem like it was ever a TV series targeted for children like the books were. I would describe Anne with an E as a more Jane Eyre-esque Anne of Green Gables, which I'm totally fine with because I love Jane Eyre and it does give Anne more depth instead of being just the annoying talkative dreamy girl.

The End of the F***ing World (2017 - ) 
Based on a comic, it's about two teens, a boy who thinks he's a psychopath and the other, the new girl at school, who run away together so that she can search for her real father. I really really enjoyed this one. It's very dark, sharply funny and is a very short series. My guess is, there is only one season of this. Anyway I was curious about the comic book, from the reviews of it, it seems it is a lot darker without any of the humor, albeit a dark one, that the TV show has.

The Expanse (2015 - )
Based on a series of sci-fi novels, this is a show I think most won't watch because the series airs on  SyFy in the U.S. and SyFy isn't exactly known for putting out quality stuff. But this, is the exception. The world building is great with good production value and the story is complex and keeps getting more so, that I can't even give a one line plot summary. I'd say take a chance and watch one episode, it quite possible be the best sci-fi TV series in recent years.

I'm picking of course...favourites and you'll likely see titles that I've picked before because they're favourites.

28 Days Later... (2002)
I didn't even know this was even at Sundance. As the name suggests it takes place 28 days after a mysterious outbreak just as a coma patient wakes up to an empty London. Remember The Walking Dead has a similar beginning with Rick too. I don't know if season 8 got better since I dropped it after the first episode, but if it's as disappointing as I'm guessing, may I suggest watching 28 Days Later.

Brick (2005)
I was reminded of this again when a book I had read was compared to it. Anyway, Brick is about a teen investigating the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. I think I first picked it up simply because it was then new at the rental store and oh what a surprise.

Once (2007)

It's about a busker and and an immigrant meeting and they start writing and record a demo tape together. Love, love, love the music in this. If you have never heard any of the songs, try Falling Slowly, it won the Oscars.

500 Days of Summer (2009)

It's a romantic dramedy about a guy who is a lot more in love with her than she is with him. It's sweet and funny and I love the soundtrack.

Another Earth (2011)
It's about a young woman trying to atone for an accident she caused set against the backdrop of the discovery of another Earth. Without being spoilery, I love the whole other Earth thing as details of it slowly becomes known.

I'm going to pick ones that I don't think are bad at all, just that for various reasons, I don't want to see again.

Black Beauty (1994)
I have seen this twice actually, the second time not by choice as it was shown at school. It follows the life of a horse and it is so so sad, it makes me weep.

Lilya 4-Ever (2002)

It's about a girl who becomes a victim of an underground sex trade and it's is bleak bleak bleak.

Paranoid Park (2007)

It's about a teenager who causes a terrible accident. There's a scene showing the aftermath of the accident that I would like to unsee.

Back to today's picks. I'm doing a theme with a theme thing. Single word titles and I'm picking the ones I like.

Rebecca (1940)
Since I can't pick Jane Eyre, here's a Jane Eyre-esque one about a young bride "haunted" by her husband's first wife called Rebecca.

Adam (2009)

Charming movie about Adam a man with Asperger's syndrome who develops a romantic relationship with his neighbour.

Barbara (2012)

Set in 1980's East Germany, Barbara, a doctor, is under surveillance by the Stasi as she is flagged as a potential defector after applying for an exit visa to join her boyfriend who lives in the West. It's so quiet and subtle but still scary.

Belle (2013)
I love period dramas so here's one with a story not often seen in period dramas: Belle is about a mixed-raced orphan raised by her aristocratic great uncle in 18th century England.
