This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

---

Hey it's October and the whole of this month I'm running the Halloween Edition. Take a look at what's in store for the rest of the weeks.

October 5 - Halloween Edition: Masks
October 12 - Halloween Edition: Dolls
October 19 - Halloween Edition: Body Horror [Suggested by Myerla]
October 26 - Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

First ever Halloween/Television edition, this is going to be fun. I'm picking favourites.

Being Human (2008-2013)
I feel like I have talked about this series somewhere here before, but since this is the first TV horror theme, I'm not quite sure when I would have. So anyway the gist, this UK series follows a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire sharing an apartment and them trying to hold on to their humanity. I have to admit, that plot summary sounded so so stupid the first time I heard it, but I had heard good reviews so I gave it a try and turns out I love it (there are five seasons, but I have only seen 3). It's a horror/drama series that is at times funny and often just so sad as well. If you like American Werewolf in London, definitely give it a try, even how the werewolf got turned reminds me a lot of that movie.

Misfits (2009-2013)
This one follows 5 juvenile delinquents (about late teens/early 20-ish youths) who while doing community service gets hit by lightning during a freak storm and get some special powers. I know this sounds more like a superhero sort of series...it sort of is and sort of not just that too as it's mostly about characters trying to get a handle on their own powers; many can't control it which leads to disastrous horrifying consequences. Anyway love this series. Even when it wasn't that great in season 4/5 it was still pretty good. Like Being Human, it just balances drama with horror and comedy elements really well. And like Being Human, Misfit is also getting a American remake...so go and watch the original first.

Bates Motel  (2013-2017)
I have not seen the last season yet, but like the first three seasons. The series is a contemporary prequel to Psycho. In the first season, teenage Norman Bates and his mother is new in town and have just opened the Bates Motel. We see glimpses of the man Norman would become as the series progress and throughout it there's this sense of dread that Norman is going to destroy everyone around him.

The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)
The gist, two vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon, vie for the affections of a human girl Elena, who looks very much like a girl they used to know more than a hundred years ago. It's a teen soap with vampires - my guess is most people won't give this a chance. Which is a pity, this series is soo much fun, totally bingeable. I've seen all the seasons except the last, and I think it's been consistently good. The world building and the mythology it creates for all the supernatural characters are great. Favourite character probably has to be Damon, the so-called bad brother, because he is so consistent, consistently selfish that is that even when he does a good, seemingly selfless deed, he does so because it benefits him to do so...and also, he has the best lines.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Halloween Edition - Body Horror [Suggested by Myerla]

Hey it's October and the whole of this month I'm running the Halloween Edition. Take a look at what's in store for the rest of the weeks.

October 5 - Halloween Edition: Masks
October 12 - Halloween Edition: Dolls
October 19 - Halloween Edition: Body Horror [Suggested by Myerla]
October 26 - Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

This week's theme is one from Myerla

Black Swan (2010)
I think there were a few in these, one was Nina's broken nail, then there was feather/thorn thing and then there was also the creepy scene with the ex prima ballerina, I can't remember what happen but I think it also had a body horror scene.

Alien
Don't know which Alien movie I saw, just that I saw it when I was very young and was thoroughly freaked out and have not seen an Alien movie after.

The Fly (1986)
Another one where I saw it very young, under ten, freaked me out, never going to see it again.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)
This is here of course, like The Fly for the transformation scenes. Also if you like werewolf movies, this is one of the good ones.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Halloween Edition - Dolls

Hey it's October and the whole of this month I'm running the Halloween Edition. Take a look at what's in store for the rest of the weeks.

October 5 - Halloween Edition: Masks
October 12 - Halloween Edition: Dolls
October 19 - Halloween Edition: Body Horror [Suggested by Myerla]
October 26 - Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

This is a boring week; I thought I had seen a lot more movies with scary dolls but apparently I haven't, so my list is pathetic. When I googled scary doll movies, there aren't that many titles either and about half of them are Chucky movies.

Chucky
I think I saw the original and one of the sequels. Can't remember any of the plot details.

Annabelle
I thought it was an ok movie, but apparently not a lot of people like it.

It's the 4th annual Halloween Edition! Yep we've done four rounds of these already! Today's theme is masks.

Scream (1996-2011)
I never got the appeal of the Scream movies when I saw them a long time ago. I've recently rewatched the first three Scream movies and I get it now. I still haven't watch most of the movies if not all that Scream references, but I know enough of them now, to get what it's trying to reference.

You're Next (2011)
Hmm...I think if you like Scream, I'm guessing you would like this too. It's a clever horror thriller that flips the home invasion plot.

The Purge (2013)
The doll like masks and preppy outfits of the tormentors in this one were just creepy.

Thursday Movie Picks #168: TMP Television Edition - Family

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

---

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Family

---

I had to think about this quite a bit. For some reason I'm not quite remembering as many Family TV shows that I've probably seen. Here are the ones that I do remember and love.

Jane the Virgin (2014 - )
The series follows Jane, who get mistakenly artificially inseminated. So ignore the lame basic premise and super awful title that I'm sure has driven some potential viewers away...I almost didn't watch it too. This series is so so good. It's sweet, it's funny, it has fun with itself with the whole telenovella stuff...it really has a good sense of humor and it is such a heartwarming dramedy. This is also the only family friendly series depicting a family today.

Peaky Blinders (2013 - )
Love this series. I was one of my picks for the period drama TV series theme. The gist - set after World War 1, it follows the fictional Shelby family as they run their legitimate and criminal business. The series feels like a modern crime drama series with its pacing and style...that and the modern rock music used throughout that fits in so well.

Animal Kingdom (2016 - )
The gist: when a teen boy's mom dies, he goes to live with the family he has never met: grandma and four uncles who all lead a life of crime specializing in heists. If you've seen Animal Kingdom the movie and like it or love Peaky Blinders, you should definitely check out Animal Kingdom the TV series. I enjoyed the first season, but I think part of me was also preoccupied in comparing the movie and the TV series. However, the second series has gone way past the timeline/material depicted in the movie that it was fun seeing what new stuff the series was coming up with. Thus I found the second season a much more addictive watch, especially to see where everyone's alliance lies

Thursday Movie Picks #167: Just Not Funny Comedies

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Just Not Funny Comedies

---

One of those genres where I often go...what...people like this? They found this funny? It could be a cultural/language thing? Comedy is just one of those genres that doesn't translate well.

The Hangover (2009)
Just didn't find it that funny. Maybe it appeals more to guys?

Wedding Crashers (2005)
I've watched it again recently. Still feel pretty much the same way as The Hangover.

Ace Ventura (1994/1995)
Don't know which one I saw (probably both of them?) thought it was one of the worst things I had ever seen. So not a fan of slapstick/physical comedy.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Like I think I get it...like we're suppose to laugh at these ridiculous sexist fools in the seventies and say can't believe these things used to happen...except it still does and I saw this in late October early November of last year, so yeah, could not find it funny.

Thursday Movie Picks #166: Financial World

Hello there and welcome to Thursday Movie Picks a weekly series where you share movie picks each Thursday. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. For further details and the schedule visit the series main page here.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is Financial World

---

I'm going sans computer today so it will have to be another short post. Plus today is one of those what-was-I-thinking sort of theme. I have only watched 3 movies about the financial world so here they all are.

Wall Street (1987)
I remember nothing other than yeah it was an entertaining movie. Question - is the sequel worth a watch?

Margin Call (2011)
It follows an investment bank in a 24 hour period as they realise their assets are junk and tries to quickly sell them off before the rest of the world finds it too. Like it's so terrible...a lot of people made a lot of money selling junk. Anyway the movie was really good.

Big Short (2015)
It attempts to tell a story and explain the financial crisis to a layperson...which it does decently I think.
