I love time travel shows; we've already had a movie one done some time back so now its time for the TV edition and there's quite a number of time travel series still on air so I'm sure this would be a fairly easy week for everyone.

Timeless (2016 - )

The gist is a historian, a scientist and a soldier travel back in time to catch a guy who has stolen a time machine to change history. It isn't awesome awesome, but I thought this was a fun series to watch and I'm glad it eventually got picked up for a second season after the initial canceled announcement.
 
Travelers (2016 - )
Time travelers from the far future have come to the present to complete various missions in order to change the course of history to ultimately save humanity from some horrible future. One of the fun time traveling things in this is that whenever they complete a mission, they have little idea how it has affected the future from which they came from and if they're nearer or further from their end goal. The way the travelers travel back in time here is also interesting; it's a little like in the movie Source Code. Basically their consciousnesses are sent back in time to occupy the bodies of people who are about to die. 

Outlander (2014 - )

Period drama and time travel? Of course I'm in! The gist: World War 2 has just ended and Claire, a nurse, is on holiday with her husband in Scotland. It was supposed to be a chance for them to get to know each other again after years apart during the war, that is until she got swept back in time to 1743 Scotland. I love season one, it was all about Claire getting over the shock of finding herself in a different time and trying to survive 18th century Scotland (like having to marry a guy, despite being already married in the 20th century, because being a single lady with no kin is not so safe), a period and country she knows little about. The second season had the whole thing about trying to restore a Stuart on the throne again, which I didn't really enjoy. I mean sure they went to Paris, wore gorgeous costumes and did the whole trying to change history thing, but I sort of like it when it was just Claire and Jamie trying to live a life where one of them is from a different time. Anyway, I'm soooo looking forward to the third season because of where the second left off.

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is The Renaissance (14th to the 17th century) [Suggested by John Hitchcock]

Today's theme is a tough one. When I think of Renaissance I think of paintings, illuminated manuscripts...art in general, so I'm picking movies that show some of that at the very least visually.

Elizabeth (1998)

I don't remember much of this movie, just too long ago, other than the way it looked which was pretty gorgeous. I mean just look at the poster; doesn't Cate Blanchett look magnetic in that gold dress.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)
This is one of those movies, that I can never really recall what happens. I mostly only remember the end where they did the last show. Anyway it has Shakespeare and gorgeous costumes. Both Geoffrey Rush and Joseph Fiennes is in this as well, its the other Elizabethan set 1998 movie.
 
Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)
My favourite Cinderella movie. It features Leonardo Da Vinci in a fairy godmother sort of character which is so sweet and he even does a drawing of Danielle, the Cinderella character. And...she also visits a monastery to read some, I'm guessing, gorgeous illuminated books.

Today's post is really late because I nearly forgot all about it, so it's going to be a quick short one.

Collision (2013)

Also goes by Intersections. This one has a pretty low IMDB rating but I rather like it. The gist is a couple honeymooning in Morocco gets into a car collision in the middle of the desert and we soon learn nothing is as it seems.

Aladdin (1992)
Grew up with this movie but haven't seen it in a long time, I wonder how well it's aged. It's also getting a live action version which I'm not too optimistic about after the casting choices in recent flicks like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), Gods of Egypt (2016) and Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
 
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Too lazy to think of anything more obscure, so picking this again. I'm sure it's going to be a popular pick this week. I didn't love love this, but I enjoyed it enough, and certainly can see that it has great action scenes.

I love clones/doppelgänger movies, don't you? They're usually a lot of fun and tend to be a mix of sci-fi/thriller/horror. For a good number of these movies the clones/doppelgänger aspect of the movie is actually a spoiler, thus I might just be spoiling a movie or two here just by picking the movie today...so be warned. Here are three of my favourites.

Another Earth (2011)

It's in the title. The movie is about a young woman attempting to atone for a tragedy she caused against the backdrop of the discovery of another Earth.

The Prestige (2006)
Two rival magicians and a lot clones. A lot.
 
Moon (2009)
An astronaut on a solo 3 year contract work at a lunar station finds that he is not alone after an accident. Dun dun dun....

This week's Thursday Movie Picks is TMP Television Edition - Police

The last Thursday of the month has really become my favourite because I love TV too. This week's theme is Police. Since I've been watching quite a lot of UK series lately, my picks are all UK police shows.

Happy Valley (2014 - )

The title doesn't sound attractive...but I heard such good things about this series so I gave it a try and it really is very good. Well written and has interesting characters. The lead is a middle age female uniformed police officer, and there right there is not something you often get. One thing I noticed about the UK police series is that besides the main crime that we follow, they also show the officers deal with the mundane everyday duties of paperwork and disturbances in the neighbourhood; I think that adds a lot to the world of the show.
 
Broadchurch (2013 - )
This series had such a successful first season that there was an American version made called Gracepoint which apparently wasn't as well received because it was never renewed. Anyway the first season of Broadchurch was excellent. The gist of the story is a young boy from a small coastal town was found murdered, causing a media frenzy as the police try to solve the case as quickly as they can. Another thing I noticed about UK police dramas is that they usually have one story arc for the season which is usually a short one and I think I prefer this format. Also while they do go through the whole investigative aspect, they also deal a lot more with what a crime does to the family and community.

The Fall (2013 - )

A talented detective from the MET is brought in to review a case which she soon finds similarities to another recent one; it seems they have a serial killer on the loose. Another excellent series. Jamie Dornan in some of the stuff I've seen him in is very wooden and blank, but here he is very good. Gillian Anderson stars as the detective and she too is just great. Her character is the silent strong type that is smart, determined but also has a sort of fragility about her. I love that there were a lot of scenes of just her changing outfits every time she has to meet the press or different superiors because she knows women are scrutinized much more about what they wear than men (like men can wear the same dark suit and no one would notice). That is just one of the astute social/gender observations the series made.

Line of Duty (2012 - ) A team of anti-corruption officers work on solving a series of linked cases. Unlike the above series, this one is a little more fast paced. Working as a police officer just seems a lot more brutal here, and I'm not just talking about the crimes...but the office politics. I like how all the cases from the different seasons are linked as we get deeper and deeper into the corruption that seem to have very long arms.

Babylon (2014)
This was my most recent watch. I think there is only one season which is a pity because I really enjoyed it. The show follows a PR team for the Metropolitan police as a new PR consultant (played by Brit Marling) from the US is hired to lead it, to help improve the image of the police and also follows two teams of officers on the ground. It's a little like In the Loop with not as much vulgarities. It's also fast paced and darkly funny.

Today's a mix bag of a newer watch and two old favorites.

White Bird in a Blizzard (2014)

The disappearance of her mother hangs over a teenage girl's life until she confronts the suspicious events surrounding it. This is one of my newer watch. It's a little weird and trippy, but interesting.

In My Father's Den (2004)
A man returns to his hometown after his father's death and befriends his ex-girlfriend's teenage daughter. When the girl disappears, he becomes a suspect. An old favourite that I have often picked and it's here again. It's such a good movie, but I think it's become quite a forgotten little gem.
 
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)
A few girls and a teacher disappear after a picnic at Hanging Rock. Guess what? This is being readapted into a mini series with Natalie Dormer as the headmistress. So this is probably a good time to check out the excellent 1975 movie or read the book. Then afterwards read the theories about the mystery or if you can get that secret chapter that was published separately posthumously...which I have yet to read but wonder if they'll include in the new adaptation

Relying on some old previous picks that make perfect rivalry movies.

The Prestige (2006)

Two rival magicians continually try to put up the better show and sabotage each other. I think this is going to be a popular pick today, it is certainly one of my favorite movies.

Death Becomes Her (1992)
Two women try to outdo each other in love and beauty. Haven't seen this in ages, but remember it to be very funny.
 
Mean Girls (2004) 
Two girls sabotage each other as they vie for queen bee status. I think it's one of the best teen comedies.
